Malcolm X's visits to Nigeria are a fascinating part of his story. He traveled to Nigeria twice, first in 1959 and again in 1964. His initial visit was to arrange a tour for Elijah Muhammad, the leader of the Nation of Islam, a prominent black Muslim organization in America.

However, it was his second visit in 1964 that left a lasting impact. During this trip, Malcolm X delivered a powerful speech at the Trenchard Hall in the University of Ibadan. He also received a warm welcome from the Muslim Students' Society, who bestowed upon him the Yoruba name "Omowale," meaning "the child has come home."

Malcolm X was deeply moved by the reception he received in Nigeria. In a press conference upon his return to New York, he described the experience as one of the highest honors of his life.

Tragically, Malcolm X's life was cut short just a year later. On February 21, 1965, he was assassinated at the age of 39. Despite his untimely death, Malcolm X's legacy as a charismatic leader, passionate advocate for human rights, and powerful orator continues to inspire generations around the world.

Official Statement from the Office of the Amir:

Condolences on the Passing of Imam Talib Abdur Rashid

In the Name of Allah, the Most Compassionate the Most Merciful

The Office of the Amir and the entire Jamaat of Shaykh Uthman Ibn Fodio in America extends its deepest condolences to the family, students, and community of Imam Talib Abdur Rashid of the Mosque of Islamic Brotherhood in Harlem, New York City. His passing is a profound loss for our nation and for the entire Muslim world.

It is said that with the mentioning of the Awliya, the mercy of Allah descends and we mention Imam Talib to remind ourselves and others that for decades he stood as a leader of the people, a friend and ally, principled, disciplined, and unwavering. He served with his life, his wealth, and every blessing Allah placed in his hands. He carried forward the moral and spiritual legacy of our foremost leaders, particularly Al-Hajj Malik El Shabazz, and remained a champion for justice, upright conduct, and the protection of our communities.

His voice, his courage, and his wisdom shaped generations. His leadership connected us to a lineage of men who enjoined good, forbade evil, and walked with the people in their struggles and their hopes. With his departure, we are reminded of the words of the Prophet ﷺ that one of the ways knowledge is removed from the earth is by the death of the scholars and with his passing an entire generation of direct knowledge, history, and experience has been removed. This moment is a sign for those who reflect.

We ask Allah to elevate Imam Talib to the highest levels of Paradise, to fill his grave with light, to reward him for every step he took for the pleasure of Allah in the service of this Ummah, and to grant strength and patience to his family, community, and students during this difficult time.

May Allah preserve the legacy he leaves behind through his writings and may He raise from among us leaders who follow the same path of sincerity, courage, and service.

This Page offers official announcements from our National Amir Gidadu for the benefit of our national community and those connected to us through belief, work, or confederation.

Office of the Amir — Official Address

With the name of Allah The Merciful The Compassionate
To our men women and our brothers and sisters in the path,
As Salaamu Alaykm wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu,
Since 1990, our path has remained one of sacred knowledge, spiritual discipline, and collective purpose. We are a people of the Tariqah, Bay‘ah, the Book and the Sunnah, the legacy of Shaykh Uthman Ibn Fodio, the Hijra, and the preservation of the African Islamic contribution to global civilization.

These are not slogans they are pillars that define our existence and guide our path.

Today, we are in a time of gathering; physically, mentally, and spiritually. Despite the challenges of the past, our resolve is firm. As the Amir, I am tasked with clarifying who we are, who we are not, and how we move forward.

We are a community united under one Amir in the West, whose authority is known, whose accountability and reckoning is to Allah, and whose service is to the people. We move with purpose, discipline, and the intention to revive and preserve the noble example of the Prophet may Allah bless him and grant him peace, the Shehu and his heirs.

Let it be known:
We are not driven by ego, nor controlled by personalities, dons, or celebrities. Our allegiance is to Allah, His Messenger ﷺ, and the blessed Gloden Chain that connects us to the Fudiawa legacy.

We stand together as one Jama‘at, one family, one trust and by the permission of Allah, we will continue to build, gather, restore what was broken, and work with others in sincerity, wisdom, and an unwavering resolve.

– Amīr Abdal Qaadir Gidadu
