The Compassion Connection operates from facilities @ Hollywood Adventist Church which sits right in the heart of Los Angeles at the intersection of the world-famous Hollywood Boulevard with its walk of fame and the iconic 101 Freeway that tens of thousands of people commute on the each day. If you aren’t from Los Angeles you might expect Hollywood to be a place of glitz and glamour. While it does put on a show to marvel the eyes, if you leave the tourist area with its bars, theaters and flashing marquees you see a different, less desirable and more foreboding side of the city. Los Angeles is home to one of the largest homeless populations in the US and over the past few years the number of homeless has been growing. In our city you can’t drive down the street without seeing people pushing all their worldly possession in shopping carts or sleeping on bus benches.
In early 2013 a young guy sat on the side walk talking to several of his Hollywood neighbors with out homes. During that conversation one thing that came to light was the difficulty that our neighbors with out homes find when trying to access personal care facilities. Because of that conversation the young man got the Hollywood Adventist Church to start offering their shower facilities to individuals without homes. The program initially started offering showers to three individuals but soon had more guests arriving asking to access showers. In mid 2013 the program started operating under a day shelter model inviting guests into the church lobby to rest and charge their devices and sign up for a shower. The day shelter model operated for four years before the program went through a restructure and rebranding. Post restructure Compassion Connection launched in the summer of 2017 focusing on providing service and dignity to guests by operating a program modeled after a spa. Compassion Connection dropped operation of the day shelter in favor of a refocused commitment to providing personal care services. As part of this commitment Compassion Connection pioneered a first in service delivery to our neighbors with out homes by offering the ability to schedule personal care appointments through our website or booking hotline.
