Scripture: Psalms 96
There are many things and people in our lives that we worship without realizing the cause and effect of it for us and what we worship:
• People with Titles, money, fame, those who can give us what we want, those who we think adore us.
• Then we move into things: Jewelry, best house on the block, best clothes, car, most money, best kids, perfect family.
These unfortunately are all for appearance only! The same people we are worshipping have lives full of hurt, mistrust, misery, anger, resentment, broken homes, who themselves are exhausted from having to keep up with pretenses.
What happens to the car or house that you idolized when it is destroyed by a thief, a wreck, fire, flood or any natural disaster? The Lord humbles us Saints!!!
- Do you know that you take The Holy Spirit go with you into all the fires and the place you put yourself like the red-light district, the dope houses. When you walk into sin, you take him with you.
- As you make decisions in you life, will God be edified or mortified?
To worship something is to prize it above everything else. To honor it as the thing of highest importance and to act accordingly. Worship is when we give our deepest affection and highest praise to something.
In the Bible, worship is defined as the whole-person, heartfelt submission, adoration, and service to God, encompassing internal reverence and external actions like prayer, praise, obedience, and sacrifice. His worthiness is more than just songs; it's a life posture of valuing, treasuring, and obeying God in every aspect, including righteous living and caring for others and as a weapon in our arsenal.
What Worship Looks Like:
• Internal: A heart posture of awe, love, gratitude, and satisfying one's soul in God.
• External Actions:
- Prayer, singing, Scripture reading, partaking of the Holy Sacraments of Communion. Participation in Baptism, giving grace, mercy, and caring for the needy (Isaiah 58:6-7, James 1:27).
- Living as a "living sacrifice," dedicating one's whole life and resources to God (Romans 12:1).
Why should we Worship God? He gave up his Son for you; he deemed you worthy to be saved and to live with him in Heaven.
Worship is the ultimate response to God's holiness and love, a complete surrender of oneself to Him. True worship of God is when we love Him with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. It’s when we prize God above everything else and put Him first in our hearts. Deuteronomy 6:4-5
Worship as Homage or Grateful Submission to God - It involves responding to the Spirit he gives to transform our hearts and lives. The Father is seeking “true worshipers” who “will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth. In (John 14:6
Worship as Service to God – is a lifestyle of obedience to God such as servanthood, showing love in action (1 John 4:20). A total Surrender of our will, talents, and life to God to serve His purpose. It is Sacrificial which involves dedicating our time, energy, and resources to God.
Worship as Reverence or Respect for God – it is a profound admiration for God's greatness, recognizing Him as a "consuming fire". Heartfelt reverence includes listening, thinking on the things of God, and feeling respect, love, and honor toward our Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ.
Worship as A Weapon:
Worship is considered a spiritual weapon in the Bible, used to invite God’s presence, break chains:
• Shifting Focus: Worship shifts focus from fears to God’s power, bringing breakthrough in tough circumstances.
• Declaring & Securing Victory: It is used as a battle cry before victory is seen, demonstrating faith.
• Overcoming Despair: In trials, worship is a means to gain strength, as seen in Habakkuk 3:17-19
We need to change our attitudes towards worship and praise. It must be purposeful and not halfhearted, filled with emptiness and hollow attempts to sound important. Worship combines love and reverence in a state of devotion that draws our spirits closer to God.”
- It must be from the heart, Spirit filled with true love for God/Jesus/The Holy Spirit.
- Ask the Lord, to set you apart for his glory, for his use. We need to ensure that others see God in us.
- Worship is rooted in recognizing God as Creator and King, which naturally leads to service
