Los Angeles Koyasan Buddhist Temple

Los Angeles Koyasan Buddhist Temple Koyasan Beikoku Betsuin (Koyasan Buddhist Temple) is a non-profit religious organization which focuses on the practice and study of Shingon Buddhism.

The Koyasan Buddhist Temple, officially known as "Koyasan Beikoku Betsuin" of Los Angeles, is located in Little Tokyo area near the Civic Center. The Temple belongs to the Koyasan Shingon Mission founded by Kobo-Daishi (774-835 A.D.) and refers to one of the Mahayana Buddhist Schools. The Temple serves as the Koyasan Shingon Mission headquarters for the mainland United States. Our temple follows S

hingon Buddhism, a Vajrayana Buddhist sect that was established by Kobo Daishi (Kukai) at the beginning of the Heian period (9th century) in Japan. This form of Buddhism is also known in Japanese as "mikkyo" (secret teaching) and is one of several streams of practice within the Mahayana Buddhist tradition The word 'shingon' means "true words". According to the teachings, enlightenment is not a distant reality that takes eternity to approach but a real possibility within this very life, based on the spiritual potential of every living being.

🖌️Shabutsu Gathering at The Japan Foundation, Los Angeles🖌️

On May 27, we held a Shabutsu (Buddhist image tracing) gathering at The Japan Foundation, Los Angeles.

After learning about the history and significance of Shabutsu, participants chanted the Heart Sutra together before beginning their practice. Everyone carefully traced the delicate lines of the Buddha image with quiet concentration, creating a calm and meaningful atmosphere.

It was a valuable opportunity to cultivate mindfulness and inner peace through the practice of Shabutsu.

Thank you to everyone who participated.🙏

“🕊️Memorial Day🕊️”

Memorial Day has come again this year. As we do every year, we joined the ministers of LABTF at Evergreen Cemetery, where many Japanese American ancestors are laid to rest.

We offered our sincere prayers and gratitude to our ancestors and quietly reflected on their legacy. We hope to welcome this day again next year in peace.

“Aoba Matsuri”

On Sunday, June 14th, a service will be held at 1:30 p.m. in the Main Hall of the Betsuin to celebrate the birth of Kobo Daishi Kukai.
During the ceremony, worshippers will have the opportunity to hold a Shutara string (thread) connected to the five-pronged vajra held in the right hand of the statue of the Great Master Kobo Daishi enshrined in the inner sanctuary. Through this ritual, a spiritual connection between each worshipper and the Great Master Kobo Daishi will be formed.
Please take this opportunity to deepen your connection with the Great Master Kobo Daishi.

On the day of the ceremony, we will also prepare “Hyakumi no Gozen” a variety of offerings to express our gratitude to Odaishi-sama. The ward “Hyakumi” in “Hyakumi no Gozen” means “endless” or “delicious”. We hope you will join us for the service to Odaishi-sama.

No reservation required.
Everyone is warmly welcome!

“Schedule for Sunday, May 31”

On Sunday, May 31, we will hold our Dharma Class beginning at 11:00 AM. The topic for this month will be “Jizō Bodhisattva.” We warmly invite you to join us.

Following the class, our monthly Goma Fire Ritual Service will begin at 1:30 PM. A casual fellowship gathering and tea will follow the service.

We hope this will be a meaningful opportunity for learning, reflection, and connection.
