Leo Baeck Temple

Leo Baeck Temple We are located in the Sepulveda Pass, directly across from the Getty Center. Soon after, members of this young congregation heard a legendary rabbi speak.

Leo Baeck Temple is a welcoming and inclusive Reform Jewish community committed to sharing moral, spiritual, and intellectual nourishment with each other and the world. In 1948, a small group of families in Los Angeles dreamed about founding a temple that would become a part of the sweeping movement to establish Reform Judaism in Southern California. It was a dream of a religious home, the simplic

ity and sincerity of which would reflect our faith. With the leadership and guidance of Rabbi Alfred Wolf, Temple Beth Aaron was formed. This rabbi had survived the Holocaust and risked his life as one of the most important leaders of German Jewry in its struggle to survive under Na**sm. He was a model of the human capacity to rise above the most degrading experiences. This rabbi’s name was Leo Baeck. So moved were they by his inspiration – our founders chose to rename the young congregation Leo Baeck Temple.

Dear friends,

Today, our hearts were broken yet again by another act of senseless violence. The news of the fatal shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego is particularly soul-shaking for us as Jews, for we know all too well the fear and vulnerability that accompany the experience of being a minority religious group in America. When the hateful targeting of any marginalized community is tolerated in a society, every marginalized community faces that same danger.

We mourn the devastating loss of life and hold the victims and their families, as well as the entire Muslim community of San Diego, in our prayers. We have also been in touch today with our many Muslim friends and partners in Los Angeles to convey our heartfelt solidarity at this painful time.

Our houses of worship are meant to be places of refuge, prayer, learning, and connection. When violence invades those sacred spaces, it is an attack against all of us. We will continue to work together with our neighbors of all faiths and backgrounds toward the goal of building a world in which every person can pray, gather, and live without fear.

L’shalom,
Rabbi Ken Chasen
Rabbi Lisa Berney
Rabbi Scott Goldberg
Cantor Sara Hass

Our hearts are with the Jewish community of Detroit after the attack today at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield. Jews everywhere deserve the right to gather safely without fear of violence.

May the synagogue, clergy, and staff find comfort and strength in the embrace of community.

After 843 days, we can breathe a collective sigh of relief that the last hostage taken on October 7, 2023 – the body of Ran Gvili – has finally been returned home to Israel. Today, our hearts are with Ran’s family and loved ones, as well as with all of Israel and people around the world who prayed “until the last hostage returned home.” As a global community, today is a day of grief, remembrance, and perhaps even a sliver of hope that, while we will never forget, there can be a new tomorrow for the hostages’ families, for all who have been impacted, for the region, and the world. May the memory of Ran Gvili always be a blessing. Zichrono livracha.
