Here's our Weekly Word for June 12th:

Dear United Church Members and Friends,

This Sunday’s sermon could also be titled, “Stranger Things” (or something like that). I have always found our reading this Sunday to be a strange passage. The only other time I preached on it, I told myself, “Never again.” Well, never say “never”, right? I’m not going to list all the reasons as to why this passage is usual but the sermon title, “The Other Side”, more than suggests one reason. It is a direct quote from the opening verse about Jesus leaving Israel and Galilee and heading into Gentile territory. Jesus’ ministry seemed to take on a different tone in territories outside of Israel. The tension between his mission-priority to the Jewish people and non-Jewish people seemed to arise. Even he acknowledged his priority to Israel in his conversation with the Syrophoenician mother whose daughter was ill. And even though Jesus healed two men in our reading, nothing more is said about their wellbeing, and the healing event is beyond strange!

Nevertheless, whenever Jesus ministered to non-Jewish people outside of Israel, the shift in priorities, focus and specifics can bring greater attention to parts of his mission and ministry we might not always see. Parts that are not inconsistent to his overall message, but more universal, if you will. That adds to the breadth and width to his ministry and the gospel message! And that adds to the relevancy of his message to us today. This Sunday’s reading points out, yet again, that no border or cultural, religious or political difference can hinder the power of God or the work and mercy of Christ. The same way that God’s love and invitation, work of mercy and care still extend to places and people… and still work in ways, as strange and unexpected as it may sometimes seem—are/is nothing less than the good news of God’s greatness and love!

Here's our Weekly Word for Memorial Day Weekend:

Dear United Church Members and Friends,

This Sunday stands out for several reasons. The first reason is that this year’s Easter season comes to an end. We spent several Sundays reading passages associated with Easter in various ways throughout April and May. Now it’s time to move on from here. An obvious sign of the uniqueness of this Sunday is that the color of the paraments in the Sanctuary will be red! And this is the only Sunday of the year for that. Therefore, many of you will make the most of it by wearing red. But the real reason this Sunday is so significant is because it’s Pentecost—when we remember, read about, sing about, and celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit upon Christ’s followers. For it is God’s Spirit that lifted, empowered, and led the disciples to become the body of Christ throughout their world; and still leads us to continue Jesus’ mission in our world. Along with our worship, we will call upon the Spirit to bless the lives of two children who will be baptized this Sunday. Perfect timing! Because the Holy Spirit that came upon and worked in people’s lives long before Pentecost also descended on Jesus the day he was baptized.

Our reading this morning is not Luke’s story of Pentecost in Acts 2, but John’s much shorter account of the Spirit’s coming on that first Easter night. So I guess Easter hasn’t ended after all, has it? But new life and power were given, lifting and leading the disciples into a fuller life of mission beyond their wildest dreams! And if the Spirit Jesus breathed upon them was able to do that then—in all their fear and dejection—then how much more can the Breath of God lift us in life, mission, and hope this Sunday morning?

Join us for worship this Sunday at 9:30am in the Sanctuary or online at Unitedchurchla.org.
