You are saved by works.*

*Terms and conditions apply: Your works aren't sufficient.

The Bible clearly teaches that we cannot be saved by any of our own efforts, our works, or our good deeds (Ephesians 2:8-9). We received our salvation on the basis of faith, that God has graciously sent His Son for the forgiveness of our sins (John 3:16). There no reason to boast, because we could not earn this in the first place.

While it is our faith that brings us salvation, what is that faith in? It is in the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross. We cannot be saved by OUR works, but we can be saved by HIS.

For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit (1st Peter 3:18)

God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. (2 Corinthians 5:21)

Our salvation could only come if there was a (1) perfect sinless substitute that would (2) pay the penalty of our sins, and then (3) overcome the power of death. We have no ability on our own to do a work like this - only Jesus can do these kind of works. And fortunately for us, He does all of the work and we only have to trust that He has done it.

Therefore, our faith is in a work that we could never accomplish. We are truly saved by works, but not the works of ourselves.
