Our memory verse for Lesson 22:

Psalm 103:11

“ For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him.”

Although we can’t completely fathom everything about God’s steadfast love, He has shown us this lesson much of what we need to know about it:

1. God’s steadfast love comes in the context of relationship.

2. When we remember the many benefits of God’s steadfast love toward us, we find hope in our present circumstances and for our future.

3. God has the power to restore us and reverse our situations.

4. God’s steadfast love is not a temporary loving feeling. It is an enduring love that’s based on His promises.

5. God’s greatest act of steadfast love was sending Jesus: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

Through God’s work, we are able to see God’s character and know of his steadfast love. He is trustworthy and we are able to trust him despite our circumstances.

His works reveal that He is gracious, merciful, faithful, and just.

Our memory verse for Lesson 20:

Psalm 38:9
“O Lord, all my longing is before you; my sighing is not hidden from you.”

Behind all the darkness and anguish expressed in the Psalms we read in this lesson, the underlying message is that we endure through pain by expressing it to God and trusting in Him.

He sees and understands our pain more than anyone else could. He allows suffering so that sin can be revealed for our own good. The pain gets our attention and can move us towards a right relationship with God. It is an opportunity for not just physical healing, but spiritual healing which leads us to a deeper relationship with God.

In Lesson 20, Waiting for God in Illness and Anguish, we read about the distress in these Psalms and the wrestling of one’s faith in God despite the suffering.

God allows suffering for different reasons. Everything has a purpose. We can look at the life of Paul. He understood that his hardships and pain gave opportunity for God’s power to be made perfect in Paul’s weakness.

Think about how intimately God understands pain. He took on the most unbearable of pain for your sake, and “by his wounds you have been healed”. (1 Peter 2:24)

Our memory verse for Lesson 18:

Psalm 121:1-2

“I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.”

The Psalms of Ascent are a collection of fifteen psalms, Psalms 120 through 134, specifically designated to be sung by Hebrew pilgrims traveling to Jerusalem for the three annual festivals (Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacles).

The songs move from distress and repentance to security and confidence in God and finally to praise.

The 5 psalms studied this week help us understand what it means to have confidence in the Lord.

We can trust that God is our keeper and protector no matter how rough and challenging the path is.

We can gain confidence by remembering God’s provision in our past.

We can have confidence in His plans for us. And most importantly, we can share the goodness we’ve experienced with others.

The Bible Project has been a wonderful resource in the study of Psalms.

The Bible Project videos have served as a tool to summarizing the key points in our studies. In this video, we learn that the book of Psalms comprise of 150 Hebrew Poems.

These ancient poems are divided into 5 books.

Book 1- Psalms 3-41 (Call to Covenant Faithfulness)
Book 2- Psalms 42-72 (Hope for a Future Return to the Temple in Zion)
Book 3- Psalms 73-89 ( Promise of a Messianic Kingdom)
Book 4- Psalms 89- 106 ( The Lord Reigns as King)
Book 5- Psalms 107-145 ( The Lord hears the cries of his people and defeats evil & brings God’s kingdom)

Psalms 1 & 2 are separate from Book 1. Most of the poems in Book 1 are linked to David except Psalm 1 & 2, which are written anonymously.

Psalm 145-150

“God has raised up a horn for His people.”

The Psalms fall into two categories: Poems of Lament and Poems of Praise.

Each book ends with the declaration, “May the Lord God of Israel be Blessed Forever, Amen and Amen.”

In summary, the Book of Psalms is about Torah & Messiah, Lament & Praise, Faith & Hope.
