Throughout the colonial period, religion played an important role in the lives of the American colonists. Scriptural themes such as divine providence, freedom in Christ, and equality under God directly influenced the foundational principles of the United States of America. From the founding of Jamestown in 1607 to the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1783, there were numerous clergymen who through their preaching and teaching shaped the cultural, theological, and political mindset of the American people. Whether it be the revivalists of the Great Awakening or the patriot parsons who delivered revolutionary sermons, the unique religious landscape in America set the stage for a new and independent country that would become one nation under God. Join us Wednesdays in July at 7:00pm at the historic church of George Washington and George Mason as we hear a selection of these important sermons that shaped America.
