While we're in Virginia on the subject of very old structures, the glebe house of St. Anne's Parish in Essex County is certainly worth a mention.

Glebe houses in Virginia were built on land belonging to the church, sometimes for the purposes of renting to tenants, but more often for use as dwellings for the rectors. They frequently were built with the same care and attention to detail as the churches themselves.

St. Anne's stands as one of less than a dozen of these old houses that survive today. It features handsome proportions, a three bay facade, interior end chimneys, and finely patterned brickwork, The house was built somewhere around 1719, about the same time as nearby Vauter's Church. Both structures feature similar patterns in the brick.

Remarkably, St. Anne's glebe survives. It lives in the middle of a working farm these days, and is safely buttoned up against harm, but it isn't hard to imagine what it must have looked like 300-plus years ago. Classic lines like this never go out of style.
