Our Guest Speaker for Sunday, June 28 is Simeon Banks – Simeon is twenty-two years old, originally from Denison, Texas, and will be a Senior at the beginning of the next school year. He is studying Pastoral Ministry.

Everyone is welcome to join us for Sunday School at 10:00 a.m. and Worship Service at 11:00 a.m. as Simeon brings us a message from God’s Word.

We Must Obey God Rather Than Men

We must obey God rather than men. ~ Acts 5:29

Peter and John had been dragged before the Sanhedrin and given a clear command: “Stop speaking in the name of Jesus.” The threat was real. The consequences would be severe. These were not timid men standing before a toothless authority. They were fishermen facing the religious establishment of their nation, and that establishment had just sent Jesus to the cross. And their answer was immediate, unequivocal, and without committee deliberation: “We must obey God rather than men.”

There was no search for comfortable middle ground. When the command of God and the command of man came into direct conflict, the answer was obvious. It has always been obvious for the people of God. Daniel refused the king’s food because it defiled his conscience. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused to bow to the idol, even at the threat of the fiery furnace. John the Baptist stood fearlessly before Herod and named his sin even though it cost him his head. When God says go and the government says stop, the people of God go.

Scripture is clear that Christians are to be the best citizens in any society, paying taxes, honoring leaders, praying for those in authority, submitting to governing structures. The history of the church is the history of people who drew that line and held it. The pastors who preached freedom from their colonial pulpits held it. The Christians in Soviet Russia who kept meeting in secret held it. The Chinese house churches who continue to mee today hold it. Every generation of God’s people has been required to know where the line is and to hold it with grace, with courage, and without apology.

Decide now whose voice you will obey when the two voices conflict. And decide now that whatever the cost, you will not be silent when silence is sin. We must obey God rather than men. It is not a boast. It is a vow.

WHEN God AND MAN CONFLICT, THE ANSWER HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE SAME. OBEY God.

The Three Institutions
God ordained three things before He ordained anything else. ~ Jack Grham

Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. ~ Romans 13:1

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Before there was a nation, there was a family. Before there was a government, there was a home. When God put the man and the woman in the garden and told them to be fruitful and multiply, to tend and keep what He had made, He was establishing the first institution in human history; not a kingdom, not a bureaucracy, but a family. Everything else that God has ordained in human society flows from that first order. When the family breaks down, everything downstream pays the price.

God then established two more institutions; the church and government. These three, family, church, government, are not in competition. They are not rivals. They are the three legs of the stool of a healthy society, each with its own God-given role, each dependent on the others, each accountable to the God who created all three. When any one of them fails to fulfill its purpose, or when one of them tries to do the job of the others, the whole arrangement wobbles.

The crisis of American society today is not primarily a governmental crisis. It is a family crisis. When fathers are absent and marriages are broken and children grow up without the foundation of a stable home, no government program can repair the damage. It goes too deep. The government can address symptoms, but it cannot cure the disease.

God ORDAINED THE FAMILY BEFORE HE ORDAINED THE GOVERNMENT. STRENGTHEN BOTH.

Aspire to live quietly and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we instructed you, so that you may walk properly before outsiders and be dependent on no one. ~ 1 Thessalonians 4:11 – 12

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

There is an old lie that keeps reappearing in new clothing. It showed up in the Garden. It showed up in Babylon. It showed up in Rome. And it is showing up again today, dressed in the compassionate language of social progress: the lie that say if we hand over enough freedom, enough money, enough control, the government will provide what only God was designed to give. Security. Meaning. Salvation. It has made this promise in nation after nation, century after century. And in every case, without exception, it has delivered poverty, oppression, and death.

God established government for a specific and limited purpose: to protect the innocent, punish evildoers, and maintain the order that makes human life possible. That is its lane. Romans 13 is clear; governing authorities are God’s servants, ordained to provide peace and protection for the people. That is a high and important calling. But when government leaves that lane and begins to play God, controlling what you believe, how you worship, how you raise your children, what your labor is worth, it has become something God never intended. It has become an idol.

The Apostle Paul’s instruction to the Thessalonians was precisely this; live quietly, work with your hands, be dependent on no one. Not dependent on no one but God; that goes without saying. Dependent on no human system, no government program, no collective arrangement that substitutes for the Almighty. The dignity of a human being includes the dignity of self-support, of carrying one’s own weight of building something with one’s own hands and one’s own effort. A culture that systematically dismantles that dignity in the name of compassion is not being compassionate. It is doing something far darker.

This is not cruelty toward the genuinely poor and vulnerable. Scripture is unambiguous that Christians are called to care for those who cannot care for themselves. But there is a world of difference between generous people extending a hand to those in genuine need and a government engineering dependence as a means of control. The first is charity. The second is a subtle form of slavery. And the Bible’s answer to poverty has never been redistribution. It has been the Gospel, which transforms the heart, restores dignity, and produces the work ethic, the honesty, and the generosity that allow human communities to actually flourish.

Our trust is not in government. Our trust is in the God of all governments, the One who raises up leaders and brings them down, who holds the hearts of kings in His hand like rivers of water and turns them wherever He wills. Government is a gift from God when it stays in its lane. It becomes a curse when it tries to fill His. Know the difference. Pray for your leaders. Support the proper function of governing authority. But never look to any human institution to do what only God can do.

YOUR HOPE WAS NEVER MEANT TO REST IN ANY HUMAN SYSTEM. ONLY IN GOD.

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. ~ 2 Corinthians 3:17

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Thomas Jefferson inscribed it at his memorial, words he wrote in a letter about the tyranny of the human mind: “I have sworn upon the altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man.” He was not making a religious statement. He was making a freedom statement. But he could not fully escape the logic: the only reliable guarantee of human freedom runs through God. When human beings are answerable only to other human beings, someone always ends up in chains.

Scripture is plain about it. Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. Not where the Constitution is, though the Constitution matters. Not where the courts are, though the courts matter. Where the Spirit of the Lord is. The most important question for any people at any point in their history is not whether the institutions are strong; it is whether the Spirit of God is moving among the people those institutions serve. The ultimate source of liberty is not a legal document, however brilliant. It is the living God who breathed life into the first man and woman and gave them the dignity of genuine choice. Every political system that has ever produced lasting freedom has done so because it was, consciously or not, resting on the foundation that God made people free.

This is the great error of every utopian project in human history: the belief that enough government power, directed by the right people with the right ideology, can produce human flourishing. It cannot. It never has. Because the problem government is trying to solve is not an institutional problem. It is a heart problem. Sin is not a policy failure, it is a human condition. And the only power that changes the human condition is not legislation ore gelation or revolution. It is the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.

What this means practically is that the freedom of a nation is always a downstream product of something upstream. Up stream is the character of the people. And the character of the people is shaped by what they worship, what they fear, and what they believe is true. A people who fear God and love their neighbors will produce a society of remarkable freedom. A people who fear nothing above themselves and love only their own comfort will eventually produce a tyranny, either of the powerful over the eak or of the mob over the minority.

This is not pessimism. It is the most hopeful truth on the planet. Because it means the answer is not a new administration or a better policy. The answer is the same answer it has always been: the Gospel, the Spirit of the Lord, filling the hearts of men and women who then fill the culture with the salt and light Jesus commanded. Where Jesus reigns, freedom rules. That always been true. Plant that truth in enough hearts and watch what grows.
