Preparing the Tabernacle
God loves us unconditionally, but He demands our obedience. Doesn’t that sound a little contradictory? Actually, it isn’t. Look at the instructions that our Lord gave to Moses concerning all the implements of the Tabernacle. You can find them throughout the first thirty chapters of Exodus.
The preparation of the altars, tables, Ark of the Covenant, and even the poles to carry the Ark is detailed to the finest point in exactly how to make them. In Exodus 31, God explains His instructions to Moses.
“Look, I have appointed by name Bezalel son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. 3 I have filled him with God’s Spirit, with wisdom, understanding, and ability in every craft to design artistic works in gold, silver, and bronze, to cut gemstones for mounting, and to carve wood for work in every craft.
I have also selected Oholiab son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, to be with him. I have placed wisdom within every skilled craftsman in order to make all that I have commanded you: the tent of meeting, the ark of the testimony, the mercy seat that is on top of it, and all the ⌊other⌋ furnishings of the tent— the table with its utensils, the pure ⌊gold⌋ lampstand with all its utensils, the altar of incense, the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, the basin with its stand— the specially woven garments, both the holy garments for Aaron the priest and the garments for his sons to serve as priests, the anointing oil, and the fragrant incense for the sanctuary. They must make ⌊them⌋ according to all that I have commanded you.” Exodus 31:2-11 (HCSB)
Did you catch the final point? Let me repeat that part … “ They must make ⌊them⌋ according to all that I have commanded you.”
Why? Because these things are for God …. These are for the One that we profess to worship. When we prepare for worshipping Him, it should be the best of our best in preparation. Whether this is preparing the Israelite Tabernacle or preparing the Temple of God that is our body …. The preparations need to be done with love and devotion.

God Wrote the Commandments

God gave Moses the Ten Commandments. He did not dictate them to Moses. He did not tell Moses to write these things down. He did not send Moses an email. He wrote it Himself. With His own finger God wrote the commandments into two stone tablets. Then He told Moses to go and share them with the others.
When He finished speaking with Moses on Mount Sinai, He gave him the two tablets of the testimony, stone tablets inscribed by the finger of God. Exodus 31:18 (HCSB)
If it was written by the interpretation of mankind we would have a severely altered document from what we see today. To be sure that the word of God was going to be given to the people clearly and without error, God gave Moses the words … already chiseled into stone by the very hand of God.
What about the rest of scripture? Hasn’t scripture been handed down from language to language and been interpreted so many times by various men through the ages that it has become like the “whisper game?” If we whisper a message around a circle, by the time it gets back to the beginning, it bears little resemblance to the original message.
Let’s begin with this:
All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, 2 Timothy 3:16 (HCSB)
Then let’s reinforce that with this:
First of all, you should know this: No prophecy of Scripture comes from one’s own interpretation, because no prophecy ever came by the will of man; instead, men spoke from God as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. 2 Peter 1:20-21 (HCSB)
We must read the Holy Scripture with confidence. There are some translations that appear from time to time that are errant. When that occurs, a noise arises from the Christian scholars cross the world about the unreliable rendition. We can read God’s word with faith and confidence that it is truly the Word of God. And we should read it regularly to remain prepared for our calling to serve our Lord.
Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who doesn’t need to be ashamed, correctly teaching the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15 (HCSB)

Chasing Donkeys

Even a wandering, lost donkey can be used by our Lord to fulfill His promises.

Yes, I am aware of the way that this beginning can be turned, and have to admit that I have met several such lost “donkeys” in the past, but even some of them were gifts of God that led to good.

If you look at 1 Samuel 9, you will find a story that has real donkeys as the leading characters in putting God’s chosen at the right place at the right time.

One day the donkeys of Saul’s father Kish wandered off. Kish said to his son Saul, “Take one of the attendants with you and go look for the donkeys.” Saul and his attendant went through the hill country of Ephraim and then through the region of Shalishah, but they didn’t find them. They went through the region of Shaalim—nothing. Then they went through the Benjaminite region but still didn’t find them. 1 Samuel 9:3-4 (HCSB)

Sometimes God will have us chasing what seems like a “wild goose chase” for His reasons. Such was this pursuit of meandering donkeys. After searching far and wide without results, they decided to seek the help of a local man of God, Samuel, to see if he could tell them where to look. His answer was astounding.

Samuel had been Israel’s judge (leader), but his sons were not acceptable to Israel as their leader (see 1 Samuel 8). The people called out for a king to lead them. God told Samuel to allow this to come to pass, and told Samuel where he would find God’s choice for that position.
Now the day before Saul’s arrival, the LORD had informed Samuel, “At this time tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin. Anoint him ruler over My people Israel. He will save them from the hand of the Philistines because I have seen ⌊the affliction of⌋ My people, for their cry has come to Me.” When Samuel saw Saul, the LORD told him, “Here is the man I told you about; he will rule over My people.” 1 Samuel 9:15-17 (HCSB)

Sometimes we find ourselves chasing a “red herring” or some “wild goose chase.” Look closely before you give it up as an exercise in futility. Saul thought he was just chasing donkeys.
Ask God why He has you where you are. He just may be putting you where you need to be to hear His call to His purposes. You may not be made King, but you may find a new way of serving THE King.

Honor Thy Father
Children these days just have no idea of how to show respect! I have heard those or similar words so often that I almost expect someone to tell them to me each day. The odd part is, that the same thing was said about my generation that was raised in the 1950s and 60s; and about the Great Generation before they laid their all on the line in World War Two. And the whole conversation is usually summed up in one of the Ten Commandments:
Honor your father and your mother so that you may have a long life in the land that the LORD your God is giving you. Exodus 20:12 (HCSB)
But what does it mean to “honor” your parents? Does this mean that you must OBEY them? This is true for children, who are instructed by Paul in his letter to the Ephesians:
Children, obey your parents as ⌊you would⌋ the Lord, because this is right. Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise, so that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life in the land. Ephesians 6:1-3 (HCSB)
When a child falls on the ground screaming and kicking his feet in a tantrum against his parents, he is not only not obeying, but he is bringing embarrassment, not honor, to his parents. This brings a larger and more realistic definition of “honor thy father and mother.” When our behavior, as a child or as an adult, brings dishonor to our parents, we have forsaken the Commandment of God. Is it possible to dishonor your parents after their death? … yes! Anything that would reflect unfavorably upon their legacy could be considered in the same light of a broken commandment.
The question then comes of how do we “honor” our Heavenly Father? Is it by obeying a bunch of rules that are etched into stone? …or written on some ancient parchment? Are we not called to live in a manner that will portray to the world that we are children of the Living God? Does our behavior fit into the definition of “Christian?” Would living a life contrary to God’s will while calling ourselves Christians bring dishonor to that name?
How do you honor your father and mother? How do you honor your heavenly Father?

DID YOU KNOW? – Book 3
Christ of the Cross
God does not want you to worship the cross. He does not want you to worship anything or anyone other than Him.
Do not make an idol for yourself, whether in the shape of anything in the heavens above or on the earth below or in the waters under the earth. You must not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God… Exodus 20:4-5 (HCSB)
Jesus was sacrificed on an altar to pay for the sin of man. The cross was the altar.
Which would you worship, the altar of God, or the God of the altar? Obviously it would be the God of the altar.
Which would you worship, the cross of Christ, or the Christ of the cross? Just as obviously, we should worship the Christ, not the cross.
Worshipping the cross would be like thanking the hammer that belonged to the carpenter who built your house. The hammer was only a tool in the hand of the craftsman. In the same sense, the cross was merely a tool for God to use to save fallen mankind.
While I have many fond childhood memories of singing “The Old Rugged Cross” in Celoron (NY) Methodist Church, there are some things to remember about that cross. First, it wasn’t pretty like the ornaments that sit atop our steeples. It was a rugged cross. It was a place of agony and suffering death for not only the Son of Man, but for thousands of victims of the Roman rulers.
For centuries following the death of Christ, the cross was seen as a symbol of shame. It was Constantine who bore the cross at the head of his legions to proclaim the Christ who died upon it. Only then was it viewed as a holy symbol.
I do cherish that old rugger cross, but not because it is a cross, but it is the altar upon which my salvation was purchased through the blood of the Son of God. It has become the symbol of our faith, but it is not to be worshipped any more than the church building should be worshipped.
Do not bow down to the cross, bow only to the Christ of the cross. Come to the cross seeing it as an altar of God, and worship the God of that altar. The cross is an image made by man to remind us of the sacrifice on that altar. God wants your worship to be directed to Him and His Son.
