Building Holiness

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell. Matthew 5:27-30 (NIV)

God design is that we build holiness into our lives. It is in the thoughts and attitudes of the heart that our true condition is revealed. Jesus said, “For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come ” (Mark 7:21).

So, what are we to do? Let’s learn this Sunday the kingdom call of, Building Holiness.

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10 (ESV)

This Sunday we welcome Mission Northwest executive minister, Corey Laughary (Law-hurry).

Corey brings more than two decades of pastoral experience to his role as Executive of Mission Northwest. After serving 21 years as a small-town church pastor and mentor pastor, Corey stepped into this leadership position with a deep passion for resourcing and developing local churches across nine states and one province. Before his executive role, Corey was actively engaged in his community as a school bus driver, and as a cross-country and track coach, reflecting his heart for service and connection. He is passionate about equipping churches for meaningful outreach, particularly in developing mental health ministries that meet real community needs. Grounded in the Good News, his mission is to inspire and support disciple makers who, in turn, multiply disciple makers—cultivating people of deep soul care along the way.

“You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’ is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell. Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.

God design is that we build with kindness. Our fallen souls desire retribution, to deliver our own form of justice. But God has declared that mercy triumphs over judgment (James 2:13). Let’s learn this Sunday the kingdom call of, Building Kindness.

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:17-20 (ESV)

Many suppose that absolute freedom would be the ideal way to live life to its fullest. “No boundaries.” “No limits.” Isn’t that the best way to live? But Jesus came with a different message. He calls us up. He came to fulfill the law of God, not eliminate it. Where is this leading? What was he trying to teach us? Let’s consider this Sunday, Building By Design.
