First Baptist Church of Longmont

First Baptist Church of Longmont Where No One Walks Alone Authentic Faith, Authentic Family! Our worship service is one hour and begins at 10:30 am on Sundays. We are a small but growing church.

We are all here because of our need for the Grace of God. We are a group of imperfect people who choose to worship and serve God together. We are a family by choice. We come from numerous faith backgrounds but have chosen to love and serve God and each other at First church. Our services are informal and everyone, unbelievers, skeptics, seekers and believers are welcome. Our focus is on worshiping

God and not a political agenda. We sing gospel, southern gospel, hymns, bluegrass and contemporary worship songs. Our space is handicap accessible, with an elevator, so all can attend. Come and join us!

Faith for the Reluctant seeks Jesus in a world where religion, churches and politics distort him. What did he really say, how did he really live and what does he think about you.

Thoughts on Easter, Come join us
Why does the genuine message of Jesus scare some churches so much? I think it is because Jesus’ message is so radical, that to follow it challenges our world and political views. As such the church has been trying to change it for centuries. We have picked fights about out of context bible verses, debated versions of baptism and communion, and split and divided churches, all to avoid having to adjust our living to his words. Jesus taught and lived acceptance, tolerance, mercy, and love.
What is the message of Jesus- the one that makes us so uncomfortable that we are ready to judge and condemn those who look, speak, act, and love differently than we do? It is because the hallmark of Jesus’s ministry was intimacy with, and the inclusion of the unwanted and the outcast, men and women living in the shadow of society, more likely to be condemned than accepted, more likely to be ignored than embraced. Most churches do not require us to live lives focused on others, unless it is to judge them, and somehow feel more worthy of Grace than “those people”. Jesus’ message of grace, mercy, love, and acceptance of those who are different, those who are on the outside, those who are “wrong” is the message of Easter. The Scripture does not say they will know we are his followers by our strict doctrine adherence, it says they will know us by our love. Happy Easter.

The Saturday between Good Friday and Easter Sunday is perhaps, the most similar to our everyday lives. Most of the time we don't experience the horror of Good Friday, although some are now, because of the impact of the virus. Most of us don't experience the celebration of Easter on a daily basis. For the most part, we live in the Saturday between. We live in a fallen broken world. But there is good news, we have a hope, in the form of a person, Jesus.

Isaiah 40: 31 "but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength."
Jeremiah 29:11 "for I know the plans I have for you... plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
Romans 15:13 "May the God of hope fill you with all the joy and peace as you trust in him..."

Mark 4:35-41: Jesus Calms the Storm

I think that this is Mark speaking directly to us. There will be times when you feel like your boat is being swamped. And, when that happens, do not be afraid. Jesus does care. Jesus is there. Jesus will calm the storm.

The Book of Mark is written (we think), just as signs point to the destruction of Jerusalem and what they held as right, was being threatened. Their whole world was crashing in on what they thought they knew. People were dying.

And here we have Jesus speaking to the People of God, telling them: Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith? It can’t be said enough: Being a believer doesn’t mean bad times pass you over.

One of my favorite descriptions of this story states:

“What God does promise is that when the world comes crashing down, God is right there with us. Jesus is there with us, in the sinking boat.
This is an important part of the story: Jesus isn’t elsewhere. He isn’t in some cushy palace somewhere eating olives, hummus and drinking wine. He is in the boat with the disciples. Sinking.
And then he calms the storm.”

But, when the world comes crashing down, and it’s not a matter of “if”, but “when”—whatever you think, and whatever your prayer, know that you haven’t been abandoned. God isn’t out to get you.
God is with you. All we need is enough faith to get us through to the moment when Jesus speaks, “Peace. Be still.”

Promises for Times Like These

So do not fear, for I am with you;do not be dismayed, for I am your God.I will strengthen you and help you ...
Isaiah 41:10
“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” - Psalm 23:4

Psalms 18:1-6
LORD!
You are my defender.
The LORD is my protector;
he is my strong fortress.
My God is my protection,
and with him I am safe.
He protects me like a shield;
he defends me and keeps me safe.
The danger of death was all round me;
the waves of destruction rolled over me.
The danger of death was round me,
and the grave set its trap for me.
In my trouble I called to the LORD;
I called to my God for help.
In his temple he heard my voice;
he listened to my cry for help.

Philippians 4:7
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you or forsake you” (Deuteronomy 31:6).

Psalm 91:11
”For He will give His angels charge concerning you, to guard you in all your ways.“

Trusting in Hard Times.

Ever notice we’re fickle with our trust in God. We love the stories of Daniel in the lions den, or Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego in the furnace, or David against the giant, because when they trusted God, he intervened-they won.

We are not as sure about this trust thing, when we look at John the Baptist (beheaded) or Stephen (stoned to death). They trusted, and by any earthly assessment, it ended badly.

God doesn’t say Trust and win. He says Trust.

We don’t always know why, but we know who-Jesus.

We don’t always see or feel God, but we can trust his heart.

Faith comes when even if we never know why, we trust.
