Our affiliation is with the Christian & Missionary Alliance, a worldwide evangelical denomination founded in 1887, with many serving overseas in mission work. In 1987, after meeting at Old Farmers Road School for 10 years, worship began at our present location. Jesus invitated his disciples to follow Him. Where was He going? Eventually, to the cross. But ultimately to a resurrected life. Those who will follow Jesus will travel that path - seeing an old life die and receiving a new life from God. As Pastor Jeff reminds us, this is what we celebrate and claim for ourselves when we are baptized.

In 2 Corinthians 9, Paul expresses his expectation that a gift the Corinthian believers had decided to give would be given with hearts of joy-filled generosity. How are such hearts developed? As Pastor Jeff reminds us today, they are developed as we remember 1) the source of our giving and 2) the scope of our giving,.

When believers in the ancient city of Corinth committed to give to needy believers elsewhere, Paul sent a delegation to make sure everything was in order. (2 Cor. 9) Paul wasn't only concerned about the readiness of the gift. He was also interested in the readiness of the hearts of the givers.

On May 29–30, our student ministry will participate in our annual Famine as we raise awareness of food insecurity, fundraise to support Envision Los Angeles, and seek to experience God in new and deeper ways.

Hunger is a much larger issue than many of us realize. Around the world, nearly 733 million people face hunger every day—roughly 1 in every 11 people worldwide. The problem is not isolated to distant countries either. Here in the United States, nearly 48 million people, including almost 14 million children, experience food insecurity. Millions of families are left wondering where their next meal will come from.

These numbers are more than statistics. Every number represents a person created and loved by God—a child, a parent, a family, or someone struggling to find hope in difficult circumstances.

This year, every dollar raised through Famine will go directly to Envision Los Angeles, an organization serving communities in southern Los Angeles where nearly 35% of the population lives below the poverty line. Through the local church, Envision LA serves communities through food and clothing assistance, health and dental clinics, tutoring and literacy programs, mentoring, job training, leadership development, and outreach efforts that meet both physical and spiritual needs.

Our prayer is that these 30 hours would help our students grow in compassion, step outside of their comfort zones, and learn to live out the kind of love Jesus calls us to.

We would love for our church family to partner with us:

• Pray for our students as they participate in Famine—that God would deepen their faith and open their eyes to the needs around them.
• Pray for those facing hunger and homelessness in our communities and around the world.
• Consider giving as the Lord leads you.

Today we remember the sacrifice made by so many in our armed services. Today, Pastor Jeff reminds us that every day should be a memorial day in the lives of those whose freedom has been won by Jesus' great sacrifice.

in Malachi 3, God's promise to the Israelites about obedience in tithing would lead to three blessings: He would provide, He would proserve and the nations would notice. Today Pastor Jeff points out that stewardship leads to a stronger testimony.

in Malachi 3, God told the people they were "robbing Him" by whithholding their tithes and offerings. We think of robbing someone as taking something from them by force. How is withholding tithes a robbery? Becuase it takes from God the place and preeminence He derserves in our lives.

Malachi 3 contains strong words to the Israelites from God about their disobedience. If you and I are honest, these are words we should also take to heart. Thankfully, we should take to heart God's next words as well... "Return to me, and I will return to you,” says the Lord Almighty.

Led by King David, the people gave generously and even sacrificially to build the temple. How did they feel about their decision to give after they had given? "The next day they made sacrifices to the Lord and presented burnt offerings to him... They ate and drank with great joy in the presence of the Lord that day." (1 Chron. 29:21-22).
