St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church

St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church In July of 1946, a Mission Development committee was organized to form a new church. We are the fruit of that first church led by Rev. Louis Mertz.

Our goal then is the same now, "To know God's love and to share it!" We follow Jesus Christ!!

Our "Walking with Purpose" group truly walked in purpose this month of April. We rallied together and did the Walk MS here in Long Beach, CA. We met cloudy and early in our team T-shirts (Thanks Melvin from Fresh Prints & Design, Inc.)

We represented our Church, our school, and our family. Our captain was diagnosed with MS back in 2020 and has had a road to walk and yet like Dory "just keep walking". We had a few of our preschool families come, lots of church family, and even some new family!

We did a great walk, for a great cause, and even did so while quietly evangelizing our faith in Jesus as the Savior our "Hope, Faith, and Love" written on a cross literally over our hearts.

Here's to next year, because we've already talked about coming back! If you don't know what MS (Multiple Sclerosis) is I encourage you to do a little research. We thank all who supported, prayed, and loved us through this process!

God is good, all the time...and all the time, GOD IS GOOD!!

Bloopers from a very fruitful evening of locking in sound and recording some new "videos" for when the band takes a break or a Sunday off. At least we laugh, even when we're all over the place, nothing seems to be going right, and we're delirious from having also worked full days at our "day" or "real" jobs. God still makes a way! LOL 🤣😉 Alleluia!!

🙏🙌❤️ 😂

"Jesus Lead On" is one of the three songs we were able to lock down a video and sound for on our fun and productive Wednesday night meet up. We're so blessed to have a praise band for our contemporary worship service each Sunday. Thank you guys for your "yes"!!

Were you aware that we are a "pro-pet" church? We invite our animals to join us in all things at our church, our gatherings, walks, worship services, and even working in the memorial garden!

Meet Bella, she's been coming to church since she was a little pup, yes she was smaller at one time. She turns 4 on April 10th, and she comes with her mom every week to put in work in our Memorial Garden.

They rake, sweep, fertilize, water, and yes, plant new plants. Bella loves helping to dig the holes needed for these new plants.

God gave us dominion over all the animals of the earth, to love them, care for them, and to rule over them as He rules over us.

Thank you Bella for helping your Momma and our garden look so good!!

Giving can be as simple as showing up on a Habitat for Humanity build day in Altadena and helping to serve food to those who are volunteering to help rebuild someone's home that was lost in the Eaton fires. We forget that just because it's been a year, people are still without a home, and suffering from the LA fires.

We're so busy moving on to the next and newest disaster yet there are multi-generational families that have lost everything, and most of them are older and housed younger generations of their family.

So, Gretchen and I went and served up some ravioli and lasagna with salad and bread. We weren't just pouring into others but were poured into ourselves. We ended up meeting a young couple who are leading their church as lay leaders (without a Pastor) and even the head of Habit for Humanity in that region.

We were able to tour the build that they were almost done with and learn about the family that they were building it for. An older couple, who opted to build an ADU instead of a garage so that their family would still have a home as well. Walking the neighborhood and seeing just how devastated the area was, was sobering, eye opening, and truly made you realize, that just because it's not in your face, doesn't mean it's not still a thing that people are surviving through.

May we never forget anyone affected in any disaster, and that Jesus himself told us to "love your neighbor, as yourself" we're all each other's neighbor and should love one another accordingly.

Beautiful Savior a gorgeous chorale piece and a favorite hymn in general. Because it's all about Jesus and just how beautiful He is. Not on the outside like we think of "beauty" in today's society, no He's beautiful in that He was 100% human and yet never sinned. He's beautiful because He laid down His life taking on pain, and enduring the worst possible suffering not deserving ANY of it, for any of us who believe that He is God made man. He's beautiful because He loved us so much that He even flipped some tables and rebuked us providing discipline and correction so we don't lose our way.

He's beautiful because He's God. Thank you, Yeshua, our beautiful Savior.

Just a little insight into what we're studying right now. This was about remembering the Sabbath and keeping it holy. I sent to one of our church elders who also has a 3H philosophy from God. That He wants us to be Honest, Happy, and Humble...maybe not in that order...🤓🥹😉

Do you do devotionals? Our Bible study at church is in week two day 12 of a "40-Day Journey with Martin Luther" and we're loving it!

Curious as to how the Lutheran Church was founded? Or any of the "reformed" churches, really? It all started with a Catholic monk who realized we are saved by God's grace alone, no "man" or priest is the way. Only Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life.

Keep in mind this was during a time when the Bible was only in original language, Ethiopian, and Latin. So only those with an education could read God's word, and, at the time, the Catholic Church made it to where only a priest could offer you "forgiveness" of your sins. Or so people believed.

Luther felt this was wrong, especially the acceptance of "payoffs" to lessen or lower the restitution for forgiveness of sin. He believed everyone had a right to a relationship with God, to be able to read God's word, and therefore have access through faith to be saved.

We started focused on prayer and now we're digging into the 10 commandments, and it's really enriching to say the least.

10/10 recommend this devotional! Dig into faith. Also, Luther wasn't perfect, none of us are, so NO this is not a "we're right, you're wrong" campaign, it's a "thank, God we have access to the one True Triune God through scripture!"

Knowledge and Mercy. As a Bible study group, we've been delving into the fruits of the Spirit and Spiritual Gifts, we're coming to a close this coming Sunday in this series, but the fruit that has been seeded and harvested from these readings and conversations? Thank you, Jesus!!
All of us have been gifted talents, gifts, things that we're able to do really well, and we've been gifted them to use them specifically for God, to aid in advancing the kingdom of heaven, to plant seeds that then God will bring to fruition based on His will and timing. We always take it back to scripture, to the Word of God. Amen!! Our Bible study takes place in between our two church services every Sunday, we hope to see you there!!

The Saturday after we said "See you soon, Pop's" at Jack's last party, our Walking with Purpose group gathered together at the West San Gabriel Nature Trail. Really beautiful walk, day, and we literally saw everything the trail promised and then some!! We saw a crane that refused to care or more, a huge beehive in a tree that caused all of us to stare upward, sort of comically, really. We saw other pups out for walks, and even two small woodland / underground dwelling creatures. The smallest or youngest of which had zero sense of self-preservation when facing Hopper our very own pup friend!!
Afterward, in true Lutheran fashion, we gathered together around a table with food, this time? Mama's Comfort Food was our stop. It really was a great day, filled with fellowship, 10K steps and of course food. Duh we're Lutheran. There are so many great walks coming up this year, here's hoping you come out to any or all of them!!

Ash Wednesday 2026 found us fending for ourselves, but our God, Jesus, didn't pick religious leaders and scholars to follow Him, to spread the gospel. No He picked the lay person, the fisherman, the tax collector, the crook, the unbeliever, the zealot even. He didn't pick those that the world would consider "qualified" He "qualified" the called. You don't need seminary school or Bible college to share the gospel. You need an open and obedient heart, you need your "yes" to be yes, and you need the Holy Spirit to teach you.

Does this diminish those that went to seminary or Bible college? NO!! Our church leaders are important and any and all training surrounded by the living breathing Word of God is good and useful. We're just saying that when times get tough, and a shepherd is found lacking, as a body of Christ, God can use any one of us to step up and teach, preach, and lead.

Just ask Peter. This Lenten season we pray that more of you have a very real encounter with the LORD, with Jesus, with the Holy Spirit. We pray that whatever God has placed on you as a calling you step into fully with a willing soul and a resounding "Here am I Lord, send me."

Yesterday was Ash Wednesday and the beginning of the season of Lent. This is the 40 days preceding Jesus being arrested and sentenced to death. He was completely innocent, and yet took on the sin of the world, in order to pay the price so that each of us can be free, saved, and have eternal life with Him.

Our preschool had their own very special chapel that morning, it was important for our kids who've been learning and following Jesus' story as He grew and His teachings.

They know that Jesus is going to the cross, they even know that Jesus died for our sins on the cross, and more importantly they know that Jesus is the Son of God, God made man. I promise from the mouth of a four-year-old we know this is what they've taken in from going to chapel.

Matthew 19:14 "Let the little children come to me"

Yes Jesus! Absolutely.
