“What is the Gospel?”

Memory verse: (1 Timothy 1:15) “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners”

The Gospel in one sentence: The Gospel is the news that Jesus Christ, the Righteous One, died for our sins and rose again, eternally triumphant over all his enemies, so that there is now no condemnation for those who believe, but only everlasting joy.

The Gospel in one sentence: The Gospel is the joyous declaration that God is redeeming the world through Christ (Matt 1:21; Luke 1:68; Eph 1:7; Col 1:20), and that He calls everyone everywhere to repent from sin and trust Jesus Christ for salvation (Mark 1:15; Acts 2:38; 17:30).

The Gospel in 4 steps: God / Man / Christ / Response

#1 God: is the creator of Heaven & Earth (Genesis 1:1). He is holy, He is righteous, Infinite, all-powerful, all knowing, all wise, and he created all of us. And, as his creation, we are made to worship Him, Love Him, Adoration, Glorify, Honor, and Praise. And this Holy God, who has made us in his image, for fellowship with him is actually angry with us in His righteousness and holiness. Why? Because…

#2 Man: is a sinner (Romans 3:23). We all have disobeyed God, dishonor, turned away, the Bible says that we are hostile toward God.

#3 Christ: God is not only Holy & Righteous. But He is also a God of love. And so, He shows His love by sending His only Son Jesus Christ (John 3:16), who took upon our flesh, our likeness, and lived a perfectly righteous life before God to satisfy the holy requirements of God. And who died an agonizing death, suffering the wrath of God, to pay the penalty for our sins on the cross on our behalf. He did this so that the wrath of God would be turned away or satisfied. He was buried, resurrected 3 days later, and ascended into heaven, and is now with our Father in heaven. And He’s coming back again. And Christ, in His righteousness, supplies all the righteousness that sinners will ever need. His death satisfies the demands of the Gospel and the demands of God against sinners. And now … Response

#4 Response: You must believe! (Romans 10:9). And everyone who repents of sin (Acts 17:30) and trusts in Christ as their Lord & Saviour will have Jesus righteousness credited to their account and have their sins nailed to the cross with Christ so they will bare it no more. And by that, we are forgiven and we are cleansed from our sins. It’s like a miracle what’s happening here. We are made new creatures and thru Christ we are joined together with Him. And we get to enjoy all the benefits of Christ become ours thru faith thru in the promise of everlasting life and everlasting fellowship with God and the joy of His love, and His Glory for all eternity. That’s the good News.

Youth Assignment: Read the Gospel of John, chapter 1

FOUR CRUCIAL QUESTIONS
1) Who made us, and to whom are we accountable?
2) What is our problem? In other words, are we in trouble and why?
3) What is God’s solution to that problem? How has He acted to save us from it?
4) How did I – myself, right here, right now – how do I come to be included in that salvation?

Answer: We are accountable to God who created us. We have sinned against God and will be judged. But God has acted in Jesus Christ to save us, and we take hold of that salvation by repentance from sin and faith in Jesus.

God/ Man/ Christ/ Response.

Why did Jesus have to die?

1) To pay the penalty for sinners / To absorb the wrath of God (Romans3:25)
Note: propitiation = it refers to the removal of God’s wrath by providing a substitute. The substitute is Jesus Christ. Christ absorbs the wrath in our behalf.
Forbearance = “to hold back”
25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.

2) To show God’s love and grace to sinners (John 3:16)
16 “For God so loved the world,[a] that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

3) For the forgiveness of our sins (Ephesians 1:7)
7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses (sins), according to the riches of his grace,
Note: redemption = This is deliverance that is brought about the payment of a ransom. Christ is seen as the One who sets people free from sin by the payment made on the cross.

4) To give eternal life to all who believe in Him (John 3:16)

5) To take away our condemnation (Romans 8:34)
34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised— who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.[a]
Note: condemnation = to declare guilty and sentence to punishment

6) To reconcile us to God (Romans 5:10)
10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.

7) To free us from the slavery of sin (Revelation 1:5-6)
5 and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood 6 and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen

8) To enable us to live for Christ and not ourselves (2 Corinthians 5:15)
15 and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.

9) To rescue us from final judgment (Hebrews 9:28)
28 so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.

10) So that we would be with Him immediately after death
(2 Corinthians 5:8)
8 Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord.
