“Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”

And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Words are important, especially the words that Christians use to explain the faith. And while language has its limits, Christ, the very Word of God made flesh, has redeemed even human language. This month's issue of "The Lutheran Witness" considers a variety of common words Christians use — words like "faith," "grace," "worship" and more — and explains the way Lutherans understand these words in light of Scripture and in contrast to the way other church bodies may use these terms. We'll be sharing the definitions from the issue in the coming weeks in anticipation of Reformation Day at the end of the month — won't you share them with your friends and family?

REPENTANCE: FROM OUR CONFESSIONS
“Repentance consists of two parts. One part is contrition, that is, terrors striking the conscience through the knowledge of sin. The other part is faith, which is born of the Gospel [Romans 10:17] or the Absolution and believes that for Christ’s sake, sins are forgiven. It comforts the conscience and delivers it from terror. Then good works are bound to follow, which are the fruit of repentance [Galatians 5:22–23].”
— Augsburg Confession XII 3–6

Every Wednesday at lunchtime, join your brothers and sisters in Christ by pausing to pray the Litany. The Litany is an ancient order of prayer that Christians have used for hundreds of years. It is a prayer that is relevant every day of our lives, in times of hope, fear, joy and grief.

by Pastor Paul Clark It’s like comparing apples with oysters. You may be thinking, “Wait a minute, Pastor! I think you meant ‘comparing apples with oranges.’” We use that phrase

FAITH: FROM OUR CONFESSIONS

“Faith means not only a knowledge of the history, but the kind of faith that believes in the promise. … It is not enough to believe that Christ was born, suffered, was raised again, unless we add also this article, which is the purpose of the history: the forgiveness of sins."

— Apology of the Augsburg Confession IV 50, 51
