DAILY DEVOTION

Stop Trying to Please Everyone Else

“I am not trying to do what I want, but only what he who sent me wants.”
John 5:30 (GNT)

What motivates you to get up in the morning? To go to work? To study hard? To serve and give and love others? To keep going when life gets stressful?
If you don’t want to fight stress all the time, you need to know your deepest motivation.
Why? Because mixed motivations will leave you feeling pulled in different directions. Jesus said, “No one can serve two masters” (Luke 16:13 NLT).
Even God can’t please everybody. When somebody’s praying for it to rain, someone else is praying for it to be sunny. As a pastor for over 23 years, I knew that I was always disappointing somebody, because people often have different expectations. I can’t please everyone, and neither can you.
The Bible says the fear of man is a trap. It will capture your heart and mind and cause you to stumble. That’s why Jesus said in John 5:30, “I am not trying to do what I want, but only what he who sent me wants” (GNT). Jesus knew who he was trying to please.
If you’re not trying to please God, then in all likelihood, you’re trying to please a bunch of other people. It’s a lot easier and less stressful to decide you’re going to please God—because whatever you do that pleases Him will always be the right thing. This is why Jesus was so resilient under stress. He only tried to please one person.
Whose approval are you depending on for your happiness? Who are you still trying to please? For some, it’s a parent who never showed approval or encouragement. For others, it may be a boss who’s impossible to please, no matter how hard you try.
But you are not a victim. You are as free as you choose to be. Nobody can pressure you into meeting their expectations without your permission.
When you live for an audience of one, you won’t be controlled by the fear of rejection. Instead, you’ll be motivated by love and free to be the person God made you to be.

PASTOR APPRECIATION

I normally post this at the beginning of October, but I am a little late in getting it posted this year.
By reading this, you will see that God's blessings have truly been upon Leisa and me for all of our married life!

The month of October has been designated as "Pastor Appreciation Month."
As I reflect back over my almost 65 years of being on this earth, over 44 years of ministry, nearly 44 years of marriage, almost 41 years of being a Father, and over 23 years of being a Pastor myself, it is plain to see that God has blessed me with 16 mighty fine men that I have been able to call "My Pastor."
I was born on December 4, 1961 and my parents, Don and Betty Parrett, started taking me to church when I was 2 weeks old.
The first 20 years of my life (1961 through 1981) was spent growing up and being Spiritually nurtured at Bond Holiness Church by God-called and anointed men of God.
In the 60's and very early part of the 70's I was blessed to have pastors like Richard Hawker, Everett Parrett, Alfred Green and his son Paul Green.
The decade of the 70's brought even more Wonderful pastors into my life. Men like Cannon Murray, Bea McCollum, Ronnie Ball and Dean Carpenter.
In the late 70's and early part of the 80's I was blessed to call Johnny Gabbard my pastor.
In January 1982 God led us from Bond Holiness Church to Seven Pines Pentecostal Church where Elmer Green had recently started pastoring.
That ended up being a very important year for me because in the summer of 1982 I met a beautiful young girl named Leisa Gross and I was called to preach in August of that year.
Leisa and I were married in May 1983 and continued working at Seven Pines until November 1985.
From November 1985 until August 1987 we worked along side pastor Carl Hacker at Moores Creek Holiness Church.
September 1987 through September 1988 presented us with our first pastor experience at Happy Hill Holiness Church in Manchester, Kentucky.
After resigning as pastor in September 1988 we went to Evans Chapel and worked with pastor Jasper Carpenter for about 1 year.
The latter part of 1989 found us back at Seven Pines Pentecostal Church where we ministered along side pastor Elmer Green for the next 7 years.
From November 1996 until April 1998 Leisa, Brad, Nathan and myself were blessed to be taught under pastor Benny Fields at the Burning Springs Church of God.
Then, God called us to pastor at the House of Prayer in April 1998, where we remained for the next 20 years, through May 2018.
From June 2018 through May 2020, as we evangelized, we were blessed to have 2 pastors, pastor Mitchell Ball at Tyner Community Church, and pastor Ashley Noe, at Seven Pines Pentecostal Church, where Leisa and I ended up pastoring from June 2020
through July 2022.
At the end of July 2022 we resigned as pastor at Seven Pines Pentecostal church because Leisa and I both felt God leading us to help our son Brad at Souls Harbor Church in London, Kentucky.
Since moving to London in August of 2022, it is truly an honor to call Brad Parrett, not only our son, but our current pastor.
All 16 of these Godly men have played an important role in helping me to become the man, husband, and father that I am today.
THANK YOU GOD FOR BLESSING ME TO HAVE BEEN INFLUENCED BY SO MANY AWESOME PASTORS!

DAILY DEVOTION

Going Back

Sometimes I want to be a kid again. I want to go back to the time when:
~ Decisions were made by going "eeny-meeny-miney-mo."
~ Mistakes were corrected by simply exclaiming "do over!"
~ "Race issue" meant arguing about who ran the fastest.
~ Money issues were handled by whoever was the banker in "Monopoly."
~ Catching the fireflies could happily occupy an entire evening.
~ It wasn't odd to have two or three "best" friends.
~ Being old referred to anyone over 20.
~ The net on a tennis court was the perfect height to play volleyball and the rules didn't matter.
~ The worst thing you could catch from the opposite s*x was cooties.
~ It was magic when dad would "remove" his thumb or take my nose off my face.
~ It was unbelievable that dodgeball wasn't an Olympic event.
~ Having a weapon in school meant being caught with a slingshot.
~ Nobody was prettier than Mom.
~ Scrapes and bruises were kissed and made better.
~ It was a big deal to finally be tall enough to ride the "big people" rides at the amusement park.
~ Getting a foot of snow was a dream come true.
~ Abilities were discovered because of a "double-dog-dare."
~ Saturday morning cartoons weren't 30-minute ads for action figures.
~ "Oly-oly-oxen-free" made perfect sense.
~ Spinning around, getting dizzy and falling down was cause for giggles.
~ The worst embarrassment was being picked last for a team.
~ War was a card game.
~ Water balloons were the ultimate weapon.
~ Baseball cards in the spokes transformed any bike into a motorcycle.
~ Taking drugs meant orange-flavored chewable aspirin.
~ Ice cream was considered a basic food group.
~ Older siblings were the worst tormentors but also the fiercest protectors.

DAILY DEVOTION

The Habit That Builds Resilience

“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.”
Mark 1:35 (NIV)

The key to resisting stress is what many people do the least: spend time alone with God. This simple but powerful habit is essential for building a resilient spirit and managing chronic stress.
Prayer is a great stress reliever. It’s a decompression chamber, where you can release the stress of living up to others’ expectations. It’s how you unload your burdens and admit you can’t carry them on your own. It’s where you are reminded that God is ready and willing to help you with every stressful thing in life. It’s cathartic.
How do you develop the habit of spending time alone with God? Habits are developed through practice and repetition. It’s not a habit unless you do it over and over again, until it happens regularly and consistently.
Jesus developed spiritual habits. The Bible says in Luke 22:39 that it was Jesus’ habit to go to the Mount of Olives to pray. And Mark 1:35 says, “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed” (NIV).
Jesus was convinced that, no matter how busy he was, he needed time alone with God to pray. Do you have any time like that in your life? Do you ever slow down and get quiet before God so you can reflect and be renewed? If you want to be a resilient person, then you have to develop the habit of spending time with God.
While word spread about Jesus and huge crowds of people came to hear him speak and be healed by him, he still made his time alone with God a habit. The Bible says, “Jesus often slipped away to be alone so he could pray” (Luke 5:16 NCV). If Jesus felt the need to frequently leave the crowd and get alone with God, then think about how much more we must need that.
Because noise often causes stress, you need to start your morning with God instead of with your phone or TV. Be still, be quiet, and be open to the work God wants to do in you as you make a habit of meditating on His Word and being in His presence.

Clear Out What's Blocking You From Hearing God

“Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.”
JAMES 1:21

Do you know what the word filthiness is in the original Greek? It means, “ear wax.” God says if you want to hear, you’ve got to clean your ears. You can’t hear if your ears are stopped. God says sin in your life is like wax in your ear. You need to get rid of it. The reason God’s truth does not come to us is that we’ve got spiritual wax in our ears. As a result, it is absolutely crucial that when you study the Bible, you make a full confession of sin and ask God to search your heart and see if there is some wickedness in you. Get your heart clean; get your heart right with God.
If you’re going to a garden, before you plant the seed, you w**d the garden. That’s what it’s all about—get your heart right. After we w**d the garden, then the seed will grow. After we get the wax out, then we can hear. Do you understand that? Receive the Word. Welcome the Word with a repentant heart.

DAILY DEVOTION

Envy Is a Sign That You Don't Trust God

"Let us run with patience the particular race that God has set before us."
Hebrews 12:1 (TLB)

One of the signs that envy is in your heart and needs to be eliminated is that you constantly use this phrase: "It's not fair."
You know what that phrase sounds like: "It's not fair that he gets to do that and I don't!" "It's not fair that it's easy for her and not for me."
"It's not fair that their kids got the award and mine didn't." "It's not fair that they can afford that vacation and I can't."
Envy is actually a battle with God. You're in a fight with God every time you envy. When you envy, you're saying, "God, you blew it. You didn't do it right. You didn't have the brains enough to make me the way I ought to be.
If you really loved me, you wouldn't have made me me; you would have made me somebody else."
And God says, "Huh? If I didn't make you you, you wouldn't exist!"
The problem is this: When you envy, you don't trust God. You don't believe that He has your best interest at heart. You don't believe that He knows more than you do about what's best for you.
You don't have some things in life because God knows a reason that you shouldn't have them. There are some talents God did not give you. There are some opportunities God does not give you. And there are some experiences in life you don't get.
You can either shake your fist in anger-or trust God. God is smarter than you, and He knows better. Read that again: He knows better!
God has given each of us a race to run. You can't run anybody else's race, and no one else can run yours. You can either run the race God has given you, or you can make up your own race. Most people choose to make up their own race in life and then wonder why they hit dead ends.
Instead, God wants you to run the race that He has for you. He custom-designed a plan for your life. When you focus on God's race, you won't need to worry about the race everybody else is running. You won't be bothered by the crowds that are cheering or jeering in the stands. You're living for an audience of one: God.
The Bible says in Hebrews 12:1, "Let us run with patience the particular race that God has set before us" (TLB). The more you understand your own call from God, the less you'll be worried about what God has called other people to do.
Any time spent envying other people is wasted time. Just be who God made you to be!
