DAILY DEVOTION

Add the “Nevertheless”

“Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”
Luke 22:42, ESV

As Jesus was in great distress and faced the coming agony of the cross, He prayed three times that the Father would remove the cup of suffering. It’s okay to ask God to take away something that’s overwhelming and seems too much to bear, but you need to add the “nevertheless.” “God, if it doesn’t happen my way, I’m not going to complain, live bitter, or give up on my dreams. I’m going to stand strong, endure, knowing that this suffering season is leading to a resurrection, to a new level of my destiny.” God wouldn’t have you in the difficulty if He didn’t have something amazing in front of you. There are levels of favor and blessing you can only see by going through a season of suffering. The pathway through is designed by God to launch you to the power of the resurrection, to favor that you’ve never imagined. But you have to pass the test. This is the time to say, “God, I may not like it, but I trust You. I know that You’re taking me through to a breakthrough.”

Prayer For Today
“Father, thank You that You are worthy of my unconditional trust. There are things in my life that I don’t understand, overwhelming things I want You to remove, but even if that never happens, I’m still going to trust You. I gladly leave these matters in Your hands. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

DAILY DEVOTION

The Shadow of the Almighty

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty…. He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge.
Psalm 91:1, 4, NKJV

Sometimes it feels like we’re surrounded by trouble, surrounded by evil, surrounded by sickness. A lot may be happening on the outside, things that could have you upset, worried, or afraid, but you can’t let that get inside. What you may not realize is there’s something else surrounding you, a secret place where you can rest in the shadow of the Almighty. Your job is to stay in that secret place, to stay close to God, to keep Him first place in your life. The secret place is a place of peace, a place of trust. In that secret place, there’s a calmness, a rest. You know the Most High God is watching after you. You know you’re covered under His wings, that He has you hidden in a safe place. When you’re in that secret place, for calamity to get to you, it has to first go through Him. When the enemy comes after you, he has to first deal with the Lord Almighty. As long as you’re in the secret place, you have no reason to worry about what might happen.

Prayer For Today
“Father, thank You that there is a secret place in my heart where You dwell and where I can abide in peace. Help me guard against all the negative things that try to get in. I’m going to stay close to You, covered with Your feathers, under Your wings, and abiding in peace. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”

DAILY DEVOTION

Showing Mercy

God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Matthew 5:7 (NLT)

Have you ever noticed that if you're critical with others, they're critical with you? If you're kind to others, they're kind to you? Or if you're generous with others, then they're generous with you? Whatever you give in life, you're going to get in return.
The same is true with God's mercy.
Jesus says in Matthew 5:7, "God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy" (NLT).
But why does God want you to show mercy to others? Why is being merciful so important?
Because God has shown you mercy.
Ephesians 2:4-5 says, "God's mercy is so abundant, and His love for us is so great, that while we were spiritually dead in our disobedience He brought us to life with Christ. It is by God's grace that you have been saved" (GNT).
God wants you to pass on the mercy that you've received from Him.
Because God commands you to be merciful.
Do you want a summary of what life's all about? Here it is: "The Lord has told you what is good. This is what the Lord requires from you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to live humbly with your God" (Micah 6:8 GW).
Because you're going to need more mercy in the future.
You're going to make a lot of mistakes between now and when you get to heaven, and you're going to need God's mercy. But you cannot receive what you are unwilling to give. James 2:13 says, "You must show mercy to others, or God will not show mercy to you when He judges you. But the person who shows mercy can stand without fear at the judgment" (NCV).
Because showing mercy brings or causes happiness.
Matthew 5:7 says that God blesses those who are merciful. The word "blessed"
also means "happy," so the more you learn and demonstrate this quality, the happier and more blessed you're going to be.
Because so many people in the world are living for themselves, showing mercy and grace to others will always stand out. Be known for your mercy as you model for others how good God has been to you, and you will make an eternal difference!
How have you seen God bless you when you've shown mercy to someone-even when it was a difficult decision?
Think of a way you could have shown mercy to someone in the last week but didn't. How do you think it might have changed the outcome of that situation?

Submarines and Water

Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer. Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come. Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.
1 Corinthians 10:10-12

The USS Batfish was launched in 1943. For the final two years of World War II it was one of the most successful US submarines in the Pacific Ocean. The Batfish sunk three enemy submarines and a number of surface ships, and it received several commendations and awards. After the war ended, it was used for a time as a training vessel until its final retirement from service. In 1973 the Batfish was moved to Muskogee, Oklahoma where it became the centerpiece of a war memorial. Visitors could tour the submarine and see how the sailors on it lived during the war. During record rainfall in 2019, the Arkansas River flooded, and the water seriously damaged the Batfish. It may seem ironic for water to damage a ship designed to be submerged in water, but the submarine was no longer being maintained as it once had been for active duty, so it was vulnerable to something that once posed no threat at all.
There is a temptation that is especially dangerous for those who have been Christians and serving God faithfully for many years to let down their guard. The successes and victories of yesterday should not be forgotten, but they also should not be relied on for victory in the battles of today. As long as we live in this world, we will have an active enemy who is dedicated to our destruction. “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8). We must remain alert. There is no room for coasting in the Christian life. The battles we face today and win do not mean that the war is over for good.
We must remain spiritually vigilant no matter how many victories God has given us in the past.

DAILY DEVOTION

Run Until You Cross the Finish Line

"Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us."
Hebrews 12:1

One of these days we’re going to cross the finish line. In fifty years, many of us will not be alive; even after twenty-five years a great number will be gone; and even next year, by God’s mercies, some will have already gone on. We will have come to the end of the line. We don’t know when that’s going to be.
You may be a teen, but you might be at the very end of your course. One of these days, I’m going to breathe my last breath, but I’m not going to stop running—God helping me—until I do. I don’t want to stroll over the finish line. I want to hit the finish line with a blaze of energy and power, going for the Lord Jesus Christ. You may say, “Well, you’ll be an old coot.” It makes no difference. “Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day” (2 Corinthians 4:16). That’s the reason you ought to be an athlete—no matter what your physical condition or your economic condition. You are in a race, and that race is not over until you bow your head like the Lord Jesus and say, “It is finished. It is done.” Don’t give up before you get there.
Take time in prayer today to renew your commitment to running the race God has set before you. Ask Him to empower you with the strength to endure to the end.
