Reflections on Sunday’s (4/21/2024) worship service… Lanetta Sprott

I’d never thought of Psalm 23 like this…

Pastor Tim started out asking us if we’ve ever had a horribly bad day where everything seems to go wrong;

or an ordinary day where nothing spectacular happens one way or another;

or a good day where so many good things happen, everything just clicks together and we know all is well with our world.

(I suggest to rethink Psalms 23 (RSV) as a narrative like I've done.).. It covers our day, no matter what type we are having!

Ordinary Day –
The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want; he makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters; he restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Horrible Day –
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.

Good Day –
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of my enemies; thou anointest my head with oil, my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

During worship last Sunday, one of the hymns we sang really touched my (Lanetta) heart. I thought I would share, and maybe it will touch yours as well!

Hymn of Promise
Words and Music by Natalie Sleeth, 1986
#707 in The United Methodist Hymnal

In the bulb there is a flower; in the seed, an apple tree; in cocoons, a hidden promise: butterflies will soon be free! In the cold and snow of winter there’s a spring that waits to be,

unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see.

There’s a song in every silence, seeking word and melody; there’s a dawn in every darkness, bringing hope to you and me. From the past will come the future; what it holds, a mystery,

unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see.

In our end is our beginning; in our time, infinity; in our doubt there is believing; in our life, eternity. In our death, a resurrection; at the last, a victory,

unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see.
