Lombard Mennonite Church

Lombard Mennonite Church Lombard Mennonite Church is a member of Mennonite Church USA. We meet at 528 E. Madison in Lombard, IL. Visit us at lombardmennonite.org.

We are a Christ-centered church in Chicago’s western suburbs where people from diverse backgrounds are called to faith in Jesus Christ and enfolded in a worshiping community of disciples. We strive to live as Jesus lived, with his special concern for the poor, the marginalized, and the “other.” With our lives and our actions, we hope to share Christ’s message of peace and reconciliation with the world.

This Sunday, we continue our sermon series on the book of Acts with the story of Peter healing a beggar at the temple. Pastor Barb writes, "Throughout the Gospels, we see Jesus often healing those who come to him. Now, it is Jesus' followers engaged in this work. What might that healing look like in our own lives and in the life of our church?"

For Sunday school in the sanctuary, we will have LMCer Kaye and Pastor Nathan share about their creative resistance trip to LA with Mennonite Central Committee - MCC where they learned how faith, art, and social justice collide from artists and activists.

This Sunday, we begin a sermon series about the book of Acts. Pastor Nathan begins with Jesus' ascension in Acts 1. He writes, "Acts 1 opens with Jesus ascending to heaven, against the expectations that Jesus was going to restore the kingdom of Israel. This points to the upside down society that Jesus establishes with the disciples, and the true Kingdom we are all called to live in."

On the 24th, we'll hold our monthly Taizé service at 7pm in the sanctuary. All are welcome to this simple form of worship that invites worshipers to sit in the presence of God through quiet repeated music with simple lyrics, silence, and prayer.

This Sunday is Holy Humor Sunday. Pastor Richard writes, "Holy Humor Sunday is a tradition that goes back 6 years for LMC, but goes back more than 6 centuries in the Church universal. On the Sunday following Easter, we turn our worship service into a time of celebration and laughter. For Christ has risen, playing the ultimate joke on death. In our joy, let us approach God this Sunday ready to receive God’s wonderful creation of smiles and giggles."

On this last Sunday before Easter, our service opens with the children leading a procession of palms. (See pics from last year's procession.) Pastor Barb, who is preaching this week, writes, "Many traditions celebrate this Sunday as Palm Sunday during which we remember Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Other traditions observe it as Passion Sunday in which Jesus' crucifixion is recognized. This Lent we hold these two observances together, acknowledging their dissonance and contemplating the qualities of Jesus who reveals God's true nature to us."
Don't forget our Good Friday "Funeral for Jesus" at 7:00 pm on April 3. Easter celebrations begin on Sunday, April 5, with an early service at 8:30 am, followed by a potluck breakfast before the main service at 10:00. Please note that the Easter Egg Hunt that was originally scheduled for Palm Sunday will also be taking place after worship on Easter Sunday.

This week, Pastor Richard continues to preach about Jesus' encounter with Pontius Pilate. Pastor Richard writes, "We continue our reading through Jesus' trial before Pilate. Pilate appears to have the power in this situation. Yet he is repeatedly unable to set Jesus free. Against his better judgment, Pilate ultimately feels compelled to hand Jesus over to be crucified."

We'll hold our monthly Taizé service at 7pm on the 27th in the sanctuary. All are welcome to this simple form of worship that invites worshipers to sit in the presence of God through quiet repeated music with simple lyrics, silence, and prayer.

You are also invited to a Good Friday service at 7:00 pm on Friday, April 3. This year's service will be a "Funeral for Jesus." The creator of the service writes, " In this service, we put ourselves into the shoes of Jesus’ family and closest friends as they mourned his death."

We continue our Dwelling in Dissonance Lenten worship series. Sunday's scripture passage is John 18: 28-40.

Pastor Richard writes, "As we continue to follow Jesus in his final hours, Pilate interrogates Jesus about the charges that the Jewish leaders are bringing against him. His final question to Jesus is, 'What is truth?' In today's world of fake news and AI-generated images, that is a question we still struggle to answer."

Next weekend (March 20-21) is the Illinois Mennonite Relief Sale at the Interstate Center in Bloomington. It features a trivia night, pancake and sausage breakfast, grand auction of quilts and other items, food booths, Dutch market, and more! For the complete scoop, visit ilreliefsale.org.

To answer Sage's unspoken question—"Is the relief sale fun for kids?"—the answer is a hearty yes!

This Sunday, we will be continuing our Lent series with Pastor Barb preaching about Jesus' arrest and Peter's denial of knowing him. Pastor Barb writes, "We all have moments of courage and fear, self-protection and solidarity with others, compassion and denial. This week puts us firmly in the dissonance that Jesus, the disciples, and we experience. This week puts us firmly in the presence of grace."

The Illinois Mennonite Conference Annual Assembly is tomorrow and Saturday (March 6-7) at LMC. Join your fellow Illinois Mennonites for a weekend centered on Jesus through connection, worship, learning, and shared life together. Pastor Brian Zahnd is the keynote speaker; the ministry of Parish Collective will lead the workshop on Saturday, offering thoughtful guidance for faithful, creative presence in our communities. Find the complete schedule here. The event is free, but please register for meal count purposes.

This Sunday in our Lent series, Pastor Nathan will be preaching about Jesus washing the feet of his disciples. He shares from MCUSA's Lent materials that, "We yearn for simple and obvious explanations without dissonance. This week we are confronted with Jesus’ approach to important things like love, holiness, and even what we know."

Tomorrow night is also our Taizé service at 7pm in the sanctuary. All are welcome to this simple form of worship that invites worshipers to sit in the presence of God through quiet repeated music with simple lyrics, silence, and prayer.

This Sunday, we start our Lent sermon series leading up to Easter. Pastor Richard will be preaching about Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. He writes, "Throughout John 11, Jesus defies what we and the characters in the story expect him to do. When things are not going the way we want them to, when things seem deeply wrong, can we make space for love and lament? For grief? Can we believe that in the dissonance between how things should be and how they are, God might be at the work of transformation, opening us to the possibilities of resurrection?"

This Sunday we will also be having a cold potluck during the Sunday school hour leading into our World Cafe class. Please bring an item to include in LMC's mile long salad bar (eg. salad greens, chopped vegetables, nuts, meat, fruit for dessert, pasta, salad dressing, toppings) or a Crock Pot soup or stew. Together, we'll fill our bowls and enjoy a hearty meal without needing to use the kitchen for heating or preparation.

We'll hold our monthly Taizé service at 7pm next Friday (2/27) in the sanctuary. All are welcome to this simple form of worship that invites worshipers to sit in the presence of God through quiet repeated music with simple lyrics, silence, and prayer.
