What Exactly Is a Soul?
It sounds like a simple question. But how we answer it affects how we understand death, resurrection, and our Christian hope.
Most of us already have an idea of what the word “soul” means. We hear it in sermons, songs, movies, conversations, and expressions like “saving a soul” or “an immortal soul.”
But this Sunday, we’re going to set those assumptions aside for a moment and ask a more basic question:
What does the Bible itself mean when it talks about a soul?
We’ll begin in Genesis and follow the biblical story through life, death, the Bible’s repeated picture of death as sleep, and finally resurrection.
Along the way, we’ll ask whether some ideas we commonly associate with the soul actually come from Scripture—or whether we may have inherited assumptions without ever examining them closely.
