Childrens Hope

Childrens Hope Children's Hope provides nutrition, educational assistance and wellness to currently 21 needy children in rural Philippines. Why? Who? What? Where? How?

First of all, I wish to thank all the individuals, organizations, and businesses that contribute regularly to help our children in the Philippines. We are trying to raise funds to get this set up so that an international missions group can run it on a permanent basis. To get all the legal expenses, finish the building to make it secure and weather tight, etc. will cost $14,700. If you wish to dona

te through Paypal.com you may use the email address to send money [email protected] and it will go into the account for the children's home. The economy in the Philippines is such that over 20% of the population work overseas to support family at home. This creates a situation of having children that are not orphans, but only get to see their parent or parents once every year or two. The rest of the time they are left with relatives who often have little resources of their own. The children live on north shore of the island of Mindanao in the southern Philippines. There are 18 children ranging from newborn to about 13 years old in the village that we help support. We send school items, over the counter medical supplies, baby formula and supplies. It hurts when they have sicknesses such as fever etc. with no medicine to help so Tylenol and other similar items were purchased. In one of the photos attached, you will see that a broken arm was treated with twine and bark since the family did not have the $250 to pay the hospital to put a cast on it. When we have the money to send, we have an after school program where the children can have at least one hot meal a day. One of the mothers fixes it for them and we supply the rice and money for vegetables. The meal program need was highlighted when one of the little girls was hoping her mama could find food at the market. When I asked what her mama was hoping to buy she told me that mama was shopping for fish and vegetables that were to old to sell. That was all they could afford.

Here’s Leray and Jeanine Hope.

Leray is now 8 and Jeanine turned 1 on New Year’s Eve. The thing that they have in common is they were both abandoned by their mother. Lerays mother abandoned an older son several hundred miles away before getting pregnant with Kevin and Leray.

I realize that desperate people do desperate things but it still hurts to see it. We have two people who make a monthly contribution that we have paired together to cover Jeanine’s expenses.

FYI this picture was taken this past week.

This is the baby girl who was left at the children’s home a couple weeks ago.

Mom and dad were not married and the dad disappeared when he found out his girlfriend was pregnant. Previously, she had left the baby at the children’s home for a few days while she was traveling and looking for work.

A couple weeks ago when Inday was at the market, the baby’s mother left the baby, Jeannine Hope, with the neighbor who lives next to the children’s home and said that Inday had agreed to take her since the mother couldn’t afford to care for Jeannine.

This was not the case but by the time Inday got back from the market, Jeannine’s mother had left on the bus. No one knew where she went but about a week later, Inday found out that she had left to go overseas and work for two years.

This was an unexpected substantial additional expense that was not in the budget. We are trying to get in contact with Jeannine’s relatives to see what can be arranged for her long term care because we don’t have the funds to care for her in addition to the ones we currently help.

If you want to donate for her care, you can do it through hopehomeandschool.org on the front page.

How many times have we heard or used that turn of phrase? A week and a half ago, this took on a new meaning. Leray was having some discomfort in her ear but knew that money was tight since donations were down, so she didn't say anything about it. Inday first knew about it when she was washing her hair and saw a yellow, stinking, gel-like substance coming out of her ear. ...

Leray, the 7 year old girl, has developed an ear problem that to me, without seeing it and being 12 time zones away, leads me to believe that she has some type of ear infection.

She was trying to save money and not say anything until it started draining. She’s going to a doctor in Dipolog, which is about a two and a half hour bus ride because the local doctor wouldn’t even try treating it.

It seems as if there has been a huge amount of small stuff happening in the last quarter. First a top of a coconut tree fell on the roof and crushed the roof and one of the walls in the sleeping area. The constant coconuts falling on the roof had weakened it very substantially. We had a problem because the tree was not on our property, but was a neighbor's tree, but since it didn't fall on his house, he wasn't worried about it. ...

I will start with thanks that Leray was able to get to the doctor after the funds came in to pay for the doctor's visit, her tetanus shot, and a prescription for the infection in her foot. She is now very much improved, and we thank God for that. The new trouble is that there is a typoon that is hitting just a little north of them so the winds are less at the children's home but they are getting the heavy rain. ...

Since it wasn’t stable, Inday wasn’t able to get pictures from inside the building. There had been some rust and damage to the roof at the children’s home. During the night last night, in addition to the heavy rain, they had strong winds that caused the roof to get crushed when part of a coconut tree broke and fell onto the roof over the sleeping area where 1 adult, 3 teens, and 4 children were sleeping....

On November 9th, there were 12 new pigs born at the children's home. There are 20 ready to be sold. This is an effort for them to become as self-sufficient as possible.

A little overdue update about the stateside portion of the children’s home. All the board members have had Covid. Our Treasurer passed away from it on January 2, 2021, Dr. Horace D. Smith, local long-time pastor and substitute teacher in the local school system will be sorely missed by many people due to his work in the community. I have had severe complications since April 14, 2020, and have been unable to work and had hospitalizations relating to the complications. ...

I was chatting with my Princess this morning and she told me that her uncle that had a stroke when I was there in 2015, was taken to the hospital by ambulance and has tested positive for Covid. His house is only about 100 feet from the children’s home. Since he is bed-bound, I have to wonder who brought it into his house....

Kevin celebrated his 8th birthday on February 3rd. He and his sister, Leray, are the only two children who live full time at the children’s home. They are Princess’ cousins. They live there because of circumstances beyond their control. The father works onboard ship and is only home for two weeks every two years. Their mother and father were not married, and she found a “rich boyfriend” in the Middle East and abandoned the family to go there. ...
