The God Who is bad at Hide and Seek.
“And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever.” - 1 Chro 28:9
Every once in a while, I will play hide and seek with my four-year-old, Anna. She loves to play the game but she is really bad at it. When she was about 2-3 years old, it would be her turn to hide and I would begin counting to ten. Before I was even able to get to the last number, she was already in her hiding place (most of the time in the middle of the room with her eyes closed) making animal sounds so I could find her faster. She doesn’t want to win the game, she wants to be found! Playing hide and seek with my daughter I knew without a doubt, that when I started searching for her, I was definitely going to find her.
Here in 1 Chronicles 28:8, David is commissioning his son Solomon to be the next king of Israel and to build the Temple of the Lord in Jerusalem. David was known as the greatest king Israel ever had, and the greatest piece of advice he could give his son for this huge responsibility was this: intimately know the Lord, serve Him with all your heart and mind. How do you get to know someone intimately? You seek them out! You spend time with them and get to know their likes and dislikes. You call them, talk to them, ask them questions, and take an interest in what they are interested in.
Here is the best part about seeking God, just like my daughter, He is really bad at hide and seek because He wants you to find Him! If you start seeking Him, you will find Him. Also just like the game hide and seek, my daughter will play with anyone willing to play with her. She is usually the one to first engage with the person and ask if they want to play. If they don’t want to seek her, she will move on to the next person. David warns Solomon, that if he doesn’t seek God, God will move on to someone else who wants to seek Him.
Are you seeking the Lord today?
