"There is no better time than now, this very Christmas season, for all of us to rededicate ourselves to the principles taught by Jesus the Christ. It is the time to love the Lord, our God, with all our heart—and our neighbors as ourselves. It is well to remember that he who gives money gives much; he who gives time gives more; but he who gives of himself gives all.

Let us make Christmas real. It isn’t just tinsel and ribbon, unless we have made it so in our lives. Christmas is the spirit of giving without a thought of getting. It is happiness because we see joy in people. It is forgetting self and finding time for others. It is discarding the meaningless and stressing the true values. It is peace because we have found peace in the Savior’s teachings. It is the time we realize most deeply that the more love is expended, the more there is of it for others."

My kids will tell you that I usually have one night at least where I like to tell them the story about Handel's Messiah. If you don't know the story, below is a brief history found on www.thetabernaclechoir.org/articles/history-of-handels-hallelujah-chorus.

It brings me such joy to hear these two particular songs, the Hallelujah Chorus and For Unto Us A Child is Born, that I can't help but join in singing these joyous praises about our Savior, Jesus Christ. I hope you are able to take a few minutes to listen and sing along.

Love,

Handel’s crowning achievement, Messiah, was not an immediate success. In 1741, Handel was heavily in debt following a string of musical failures. It seemed that his career was over and he may even be forced to go to debtors’ prison. On April 8, 1741, Handel gave what he believed to be his final concert.

Later that year, two key events changed the course of Handel’s life and the landscape of music forever—his friend Charles Jennens wrote a libretto taken from the Bible, based on the life of Jesus Christ, and gave it to Handel. Then, Handel was given funding by a group of charities from Dublin, Ireland, to compose a new work for a benefit performance that would help free men from debtors’ prison. Handel would also receive his own commission for composing the work, which in turn helped him on his path to reversing his own misfortune.

The composition of Messiah, the complete 260-page oratorio, began on August 22, 1741, and was composed in just 24 days, when Handel finished the final orchestration on September 14, 1741.

Sometimes I catch myself worrying about what the future will bring. If I dwell on it too much, I get a little anxious. I love this quote by President Hinckley:

"It all works out. Don’t worry. I say that to myself every morning. It will all work out. If you do your best, it will all work out. Put your trust in God, and move forward with faith and confidence in the future. The Lord will not forsake us. He will not forsake us."

Because of Jesus Christ - His love, His atoning sacrifice, and His resurrection, we have the assurance that everything will work out. We don't need to worry! I'm so grateful for the peace the knowledge of a loving Savior gives me, and for the hope I have that the future will be ok.

“Let us never forget that we are disciples and followers of Jesus Christ, the living Son of the living God. To truly honor His coming into the world, we must do as He did and reach out in compassion and mercy to our fellowmen. This we can do daily, by word and deed. Let this become our Christmas tradition, no matter where we are — to be a little kinder, more forgiving, less judging, more grateful and more generous in sharing our abundance with those in need” (First Presidency’s Christmas Devotional, Dec. 3, 2017).

Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf

This Christmas, wherever we are, I hope we can all celebrate the greatest gift of all. Without Him we would be lost. With Him there is always a way.

Reflecting on the past year, we are amazed at the faith and dedication of the youth in the church today. We hear several reports of the youth visiting the baptistry in the temple multiple times to participate in the ordinances of baptisms for the dead and not just when it is scheduled as a ward youth activity. It is truly wonderful and inspiring to see the words of Elijah coming to fruition before our eyes. May we all strive to be as faithful and dedicated to temple work in this coming year.

"Growing up, the chapel in the church building I attended had this image of the Savior as a stained-glass window behind the pulpit. As a young boy, I would quietly look at it during sacrament meeting. Over the years, this painting has become deeply meaningful to me. It reminds me that the Lord is never distant. He is always drawing near, always knocking, always inviting.

These verses from Revelation have taken on even greater power to me as an adult:
“As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.
Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door,
I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne,
even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.”
- Revelation 3:19–21

I testify that Jesus Christ lives. He is inviting each one of us every day to come unto Him by yielding to the enticings of the Holy Spirit, repenting, and letting Him into the deepest parts of our lives. His knock is gentle, but constant. His arms are open. His mercy is real.

If you feel overwhelmed or heavy laden this Christmas season, listen for His voice. Follow the quiet promptings that lead you toward Him. Open the door. He will come in. And in Him, you will find rest.”

I love the Relief Society. Being able to study and ponder its early days and the necessity of this organization in the church has filled my soul this week. Our goal as women in the church should be to help each other draw near to Christ. I invite you to prayerfully consider who might need some extra “love of Jesus Christ” in their life and be brave enough to contact them this week. It could be through a text, card, cookies, or a sit down visit, but allow yourself the opportunity to “fulfill your divine mandate as a member of the Relief Society”.

I know that our Heavenly Father will bless you to find those who need some extra love, He will inspire you to know what to say, and He will bless you with the feel-good-feelings that service brings. We are so blessed to have the Relief Society!! I will always be grateful for the friendships I have made through this divinely appointed organization.

I love this quote given by Patricia Holland at the Worldwide Devotional for Young Adults in Jan. 2023. My hope is that we can find time to be still and enjoy the simple beauty of the gospel in our lives.

"What I regret most in my youth is that I didn’t see the simple beauty of the gospel; I made even the gospel too complex. I felt it was too overwhelming, too difficult, and sometimes even too mysterious. It seemed to me that even as a young adult I had to climb a mountain of righteousness, go through a fiery furnace of purification, and unravel every doctrinal controversy known to mankind if I were ever to be acceptable before God.

Needless to say, my thinking then was more than a little girl from southern Utah felt she could tackle. It was as someone once said: “The reason people do not join with you Christians is because you wear your religion like a headache, like a crown of thorns.” There is only one person who has had to bear that crown of thorns, and He did it so that we might live joyfully, abundantly, and peacefully—not despairingly. The gospel was never meant to be a mountain that little girl could not climb. He wanted her—and everyone else in the world—to always be filled with hope. He wants us to know that the gospel is beautifully simple and simply beautiful."

I recently read an article that was talking about the degree of difficulty with which all of us face life. How one person's degree of difficulty is going to be different than someone else's. The author quoted Sister Runia who said, "Your Savior knows the degree of difficulty you’re experiencing. He’s felt it!" I love that, and hope that as we keep trying to do our best, we will remember that our Savior is with us through all of our trials and hardships.

The author then says, "I hope that remembering that everyone faces a different degree of difficulty makes me a more compassionate person. Most of the time, we don’t know what people have been through in their lives that may be the cause of their actions or attitudes today. Living with the assumption that everyone is doing their best may help us be more Christlike."
This was a great reminder to me to be more compassionate and loving to everyone around me, including myself.

"Primary music can be a miracle carried along the lifelong arc of discipleship that our children will travel. A song learned at age six has the power to stay with us—and can return decades later in moments of decision, temptation, grief, or joy. Perhaps in our later years, the lyrics of “I Will Follow God’s Plan” may serve as a spiritual anchor that echoes the witness of the Apostle Paul of the surety of God’s promises to us. Or they may remind us that because God keeps His promises, His covenants offer strong consolation and a place of refuge and invite us to put our hope and assurance steadfastly on Jesus Christ and in His atoning power."

I loved all the conference messages but during this time of change within our stake, I especially loved Elder Gong's message to make sure no one sits alone, and everyone has a home at church with us. As we make this transition, I hope we can remember to go outside of our comfort zones, and make sure all are welcome, and no one is alone at our church meetings.

"Let us genuinely welcome, acknowledge, minister to, love. May each friend, sister, brother, not be a stranger but a child at home."
