Genesis 11:1-9
Acts 2:1-11
John 14:23-31

Lord God, Holy Spirit, who on the sacred day of Pentecost full the hearts of the apostles with new gifts: enlighten our hearts also and grant that we may keep the feast devoutly. Come, precious guest of our hearts; come, only Treasure of our souls. Dwell in us as your temple; purify our hearts from sin. Make us all the anointed of the Lord, and help us by Your power to resist all our spiritual enemies and to obtain the victory. In our prayers and thanksgivings, intercede for us with groanings too deep for words. Comfort all troubled hearts, that the bones that You have broken may rejoice. Support us by Your power against the accusations of our heart and conscience, that there may be no condemnation for us. May Your peace, which surpasses all human understanding, guard our hearts and our minds to joy everlasting. Give and grant us, O God, Holy Spirit, sincere joy in this holy feast, and when this life is done, let us ever proclaim Your wondrous works; who with the Father and the Son are most blessed forever. Amen.

Memory Verse: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:8-9.

Catechism: Confession
What is the Office of the Keys?
The Office of the Keys is that special authority which Christ has given to His Church on earth to forgive the sins of repentant sinners, but to withhold forgiveness from the unrepentant as long as they do not repent.
Where is this written?
This is what St. John the Evangelist writes in chapter twenty: The Lord Jesus breathed on His disciples and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”
What do you believe according to these words?
I believe that when the called ministers of Christ deal with us by His divine command, in particular when they exclude openly unrepentant sinners from the Christian congregation and absolve those who repent of their sins and want to do better, this is just as valid and certain, even in heaven, as if Christ our dear Lord deals with us Himself.

The good news is that even in Ezekiel’s time, God promised that what He will do for us is not for our sake or what we have done. We will not sanctify His name. We will not be the ones who need to make God holy. He will sanctify His own name, for His holy name’s sake. The good that God will do, the gifts that He will grant, will come from the promises He has made from Himself, from His own desires.

Lord God, heavenly Father, who in Your fatherly goodness are pleased to chasten Your children on earth with the rod of discipline, that we may be conformed to the likeness of Your only-begotten Son in both present suffering and future glory: we beseech You to comfort us with Your Holy Spirit in tribulation and cross, that we may not despair but cling firmly to this comfort, according to the promise of Your Son that our suffering will be but little, and then shall follow eternal joy, that by such hope we may patiently overcome all misfortune and through Jesus Christ obtain salvation. Amen.

Catechism: The Sacrament of Holy Baptism

How can water do such great things?
Certainly not just water, but the word of God in and with the water does these things, along with the faith which trusts this word of God in the water. For without God’s word the water is plain water and no Baptism. But with the word of God it is a Baptism, that is, a life-giving water, rich in grace, and a washing of the new birth in the Holy Spirit, as St. Paul says in Titus, chapter three: “He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirt, whom He poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by His grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. This is a trustworthy saying.”

"You probably know it’s easy to be good when everyone is good to you. Jesus in His earthly ministry was continually attacked by the chief priests, scribes, and pharisees. They tried to tempt Him, test Him, and plotted to kill Him. Then there were of course many more well-meaning people making demands on Him. The disciples needed to be taught and not getting it. The people making Him physically weary with their requests. Besides all this, the temptation with the devil for 40 days and nights. Just thinking about that, you would expect a person to get angry, get short with people, resent them, think badly of them. You know that’s how you would be with a task like Jesus has. So many today are overwhelmed with anxiety and depression because of their responsibilities, work, and family conflict. Christ bore all this and more. This was done in His state of humiliation"

Lord God, heavenly Father, who have tenderly remembered us miserable men and have set Your Son over us as our keeper, not only to feed us with Your Word but also by His protection to deliver and preserve us from sin, death, and the devil; we beseech You to grant Your Holy Spirit that, just as this Shepherd knows us and has assumed our troubles as His own, so in all our pressing concerns, we may also cling to Him, seek and expect help and comfort in Him, heartily follow His voice, and so through Him obtain eternal salvation. Amen.

It works for forgiveness of sins, rescues from death and the devil, and gives eternal salvation to all who believe this, as the words and promises of God declare.

Christ our Lord says in the last chapter of Mark: “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.”
