Today is the Feast of John, Apostle and Evangelist, a Major Feast in the Anglican Church in North America.

John, his brother James, and Peter formed the inner circle in the apostolic group. With Peter and James, he witnessed the Transfiguration, the healing of Peter's mother-in-law, the raising of the daughter of Jairus, and the agony at Gethsemane. Jesus nicknamed the brothers John and James “sons of thunder.” John is traditionally regarded as the author of the Fourth Gospel, the three epistles that bear his name, and the Book of Revelation. In connection with Revelation, he is called John “the Divine,” and John “the Theologian.” After a period of exile on the isle of Patmos under the emperor Domitian, he went to Asia Minor and settled at Ephesus. According to tradition, John wrote Revelation while on the isle of Patmos. He probably died in Ephesus. John is believed to be the only apostle who was not martyred. Some consider him the patron of theologians, writers, and those who produce books.

Collect for John, Apostle and Evangelist:
Shed upon your Church, O Lord, the brightness of your light; that we, being illumined by the teaching of your apostle and evangelist John, may so walk in the light of your truth, that at length we may attain to the fullness of eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

Today is the Feast of Thomas the Apostle, a Major Feast in the Anglican Church in North America.

Also called Didymus, the twin, Thomas is identified as an apostle in all the lists of the apostles (Mt 10:3, Mk 3:18, Lk 6:15, Acts 1:13), and he has an important role in John's gospel. Thomas boldly urges his fellow disciples to go with Jesus to Bethany in Judea, despite the dangers they will face. Thomas says, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.” (Jn 11:16). At the Last Supper, Thomas tells Jesus that he does not know where Jesus is going, and asks, “How can we know the way?” (Jn 14:5). Thomas was absent at the time of Jesus' first appearance to the disciples after the resurrection. Thomas did not believe the other disciples when they told him they had seen the Lord. He has been known as “doubting Thomas” because of his disbelief that Jesus had appeared to the disciples. Thomas needed proof to believe. He did believe when Jesus appeared to him and the other disciples a week later. Thomas responds to Jesus' appearance by clearly proclaiming his faith, “My Lord and my God!” (Jn 20:28). Jesus said, “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” (Jn 20:29). He is associated with the Christian mission to Parthia and India. Thomas's willingness to express his doubts and his faith in Jesus has provided a helpful example for many Christians.

Collect for Thomas the Apostle:
Everliving God, you strengthened your apostle Thomas with firm and certain faith in your Son’s resurrection: Grant us so perfectly and without doubt to believe in Jesus Christ, our Lord and our God, that our faith may never be found wanting in your sight; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen.

Today is the Feast of Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, a Minor Feast in the Anglican Church in North America.

Popularly known as Santa Claus, very little is known about the life of Nicholas. He became Bishop of Myra on the southwest coast of Asia Minor. He was imprisoned for his faith in the persecution (303-311) that began under the Emperor Diocletian, and attended the Council of Nicaea in 325. Nicholas is the traditional patron of seafarers and sailors. He is also known as a patron of children, based on his reputation as a bearer of gifts to children.

Collect for Nicholas, Bishop of Myra:
O God, our heavenly Father, you raised up your faithful servant Nicholas to be Bishop and pastor in your Church and to feed your flock: Give abundantly to all pastors the gifts of your Holy Spirit, that they may minister in your household as true servants of Christ and stewards of your divine mysteries; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.

Today is the Feast of Andrew the Apostle, a Major Feast in the Anglican Church in North America.

Andrew, and his brother Simon Peter were both fishermen. It was Andrew who brought the boy with the loaves and fishes to Jesus for the feeding of the multitude. The tradition claims that he was crucified on an X-shaped cross. Andrew has been the patron saint of Scotland since the middle of the eighth century.

Collect for Andrew the Apostle:
Almighty God, you gave such grace to your apostle Andrew that he readily obeyed the call of your Son Jesus Christ, and brought his brother with him: Give us, who are called by your holy Word, grace to follow him without delay, and to bring those near to us into his gracious presence; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
