Any thing that is more important to us then God, ie: sports, job, shopping - anything that has our attention most of the time could become a "god" to us. It's what's most important to us. It doesn't mean that doing those things are bad, they are not. It's when they become more important to us than God. Or we rather spend all our time doing those things and only serving God out of some obligation instead of our deep love for him.

But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living.
