The Sullivan County Coalition Against Antisemitism issued the following statement concerning the terrorist attack on Jewish attendees at the Chanukah celebration in Australia:

We are shocked and saddened to learn that innocent Jewish participants in a Chanukah celebration in Australia were victims of a horrendous terrorist attack. Though a world away, our hearts go out to the families of those killed and we pray for a speedy and full recovery for those injured.

We are concerned that this latest assault underscores how vulnerable Jews are wherever they live. We pray that this shocking attack will underscore the need for respect for all faiths and religious observances.

The Sullivan County Coalition Against Antisemitism represents more than a dozen local Jewish organizations and Jewish houses of worship joined in their commitment to combating antisemitism and hate in all its forms.

Our hearts ache for the victims and families impacted by the tragedy at Bondi Beach. May the memories of those lost be a blessing, and may comfort and strength surround all who are grieving.

We are said to announce the passing of our dear friend and former President, Bob Freedman.

For more than three decades, Bob devoted himself to Agudas Achim with vision, courage, and unwavering commitment. His leadership guided our congregation through one of the most significant transitions in our history, helping shepherd our community from its Orthodox roots into the vibrant Reform congregation we are today.

He was more than that though. Bob was a husband, a father, a grandfather, an educator, a community leader a friend and a good man. We already miss him.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to his wife Lynne, his son Michael and his grandchildren, May his memory be a blessing.

YIZKOR

Yizkor means remember. The Yizkor service is an opportunity to honor those that have passed by giving tzedakah [charity] in their memory, on the theory that the good deeds of the survivors elevate the souls of the departed. By giving charity, we are performing a positive physical deed in this world, something that the departed can no longer do.

The Sullivan County Coalition Against Antisemitism expressed its outrage at learning that a Hatzalah paramedic was allegedly assaulted while on call responding to a medical emergency after a motor vehicle accident in Loch Sheldrake.

“It is outrageous that a Jewish emergency medical technician could be attacked while working to save lives in the wake of a vehicular accident. We are pleased to learn that law enforcement responded quickly and arrested the alleged perpetrator,” said Steven Sharoff on behalf of the Coalition.

“This level of antisemitism and hatred must be recognized and responded to by our local leaders. It has gotten to a level that threatens people's safety and this must stop.”

New Coalition Condemns Antisemitic Incidents

The newly formed Sullivan County Coalition Against Antisemitism today condemned reported acts of antisemitism in Woodburne and South Fallsburg. Eggs were reportedly thrown at the local rabbi in front of the synagogue in Woodburne and at other Jewish individuals in South Fallsburg.

“It is outrageous that in Sullivan County Jews are being attacked at or near their house of worship solely because of their religion,” said Jacob Billig, a representative of the Coalition of eight Sullivan County synagogues. “We commend the Fallsburg Police Department and other local law enforcement for their swift action to investigate these horrific incidents of hate and bigotry.”

The mission of the Sullivan County Coalition Against Antisemitism is to combat antisemitism in all its forms by denouncing acts of hate, bigotry and offensive speech and delivering a strong immediate response, and by engaging the community through education and activism in opposition to intolerance and disrespect.
