We tend to imagine beginnings as moments of clarity. A new plan. A fresh start. A confident first step.

But some beginnings arrive much more quietly.

A question.
A conversation.
A small decision.
A willingness to try.
A realization that something in us is changing.

This month, we're exploring what it means to begin without having everything figured out, and what becomes possible when we remember that we don't have to begin alone.

Before Star Wars, George Lucas took us cruising through one unforgettable summer night.

Our September Movie Discussion Club selection is the 1973 classic American Graffiti, a coming-of-age story following a group of teenagers through one last night of cruising, music, friendship, and uncertainty before some of them leave for college.

Set in Modesto, the film comes with plenty to talk about and a soundtrack that practically deserves its own discussion. 🎶

Want to see it on the big screen first? The Vine Cinema is showing American Graffiti on Thursday, August 27 at 7 PM as part of its Classic Movie series. Come early and check out the classic cars. It's also widely available to stream.

Sometimes taking action begins with a pen, a piece of paper, and a table full of neighbors.

Join UUCiL's Social Justice Committee for our next Letter Writing Campaign on Sunday, August 23.

We'll gather after worship to write postcards and letters about issues that matter to us and make our voices heard by elected officials and other decision-makers.

Sometimes wisdom shows up in unexpected places. Even at the edge of a fictional apocalypse.

In The Dungeon Anarchist’s Cookbook, the third book in Matt Dinniman’s wildly popular Dungeon Crawler Carl series, Carl has spent much of his life feeling alone. It’s only when everything has quite literally fallen apart that he realizes how deeply he needs other people.

Thankfully, we don’t have to wait for the apocalypse to figure that out.

We need people who know our names. People who show up. People who challenge us, laugh with us, make things with us, share meals with us, and remind us that whatever we’re carrying doesn’t have to be carried alone.

Perhaps that’s part of what it means to build community: recognizing that needing one another isn’t a weakness. It’s part of being human.

And maybe one of the most meaningful things we can build together is a place where fewer people have to feel alone.

We take in stories each day – headlines, ideologies, campaign tactics, politics, and stump speeches – attempting to convince us that human goodness is impossible. It would be understandable to adopt this lens as our own in this chaotic time, if it were not for the way we as Unitarian Universalists live with one another in community.

When we affirm in our congregations and communities that humanity is inherently worthy and met in that highest value by all of creation, when we give of our time and our resources to strengthen the work of partnership and faithful witness, we are refuting the stories of the day and renewing the very wholeness and possibility of our tradition.

Nicole Pressley, the UUA’s Organizing Strategy Team director, insists that for democracy to work, we need one another and therefore, we must care for each other. All of the work of Side With Love is an investment in democracy and the collective power of community. It is all about the promise, the process, and the people.

Our labor on behalf of climate justice is an investment in democracy. Our work for abolition is an investment in democracy. Our insistence on bodily autonomy through reproductive justice, LGBTQ and gender justice, and disability rights is an investment in democracy. Organizing against criminalization as racial justice and immigration justice is an investment in democracy.

Our showing up for electoral justice, especially in this election season, is an investment in each other and through this, an investment in democracy. The promise of democracy lives in the collective whole and it is made manifest through our actions and our care for one another.

Every person deserves a safe place to begin again.

For the next six months, UUCiL is proud to support Tri-Valley Haven as our congregational tithing partner.

Tri-Valley Haven has served survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault and families throughout our community for decades. Their confidential domestic violence shelter currently has space for 30 people and provides residents with counseling, case management, legal resources, life-skills education, food, clothing, and other support.

Now, they're building for the future.

A new confidential shelter is expected to be completed in December 2026, increasing capacity from 30 to 45 beds while creating a safer, more confidential and trauma-informed environment for survivors and their children.

From July through December, half of UUCiL's Sunday offering will be shared with Tri-Valley Haven, helping support this important project and the people who will find safety, care, and a path forward there for years to come.

Tri-Valley Haven's mission reminds us that creating a more peaceful world happens "one person, one family, one community at a time."

We're grateful to help build that world together.

Turns out, community is kinda chic.

So is curiosity. And changing your mind. And caring about your neighbors. And having friends who aren't your age. And showing up for people whose lives look different from yours.

Maybe some of the things that feel a little countercultural these days are the things humans have needed all along.

At UUCiL, we're still figuring things out, asking questions, caring for one another, working for justice, making music, sharing meals, and practicing how to live our values together.

Kinda chic, if you ask us. ✨

Thoreau’s three chairs offer a simple image for the different kinds of connection that sustain us.

There is solitude: time to listen inwardly, reflect, and reconnect with what grounds us.

There is friendship: relationships where we can be known, cared for, challenged, and changed.

And there is community: spaces where we practice belonging, live our values alongside others, and join together in the work of creating a more just and loving world.

A full life asks us to find a balance among all three, and to trust ourselves to know when each one is needed.
