He became one of the world's most respected heart surgeons.

But for Servant of God Giancarlo Rastelli, medicine was never simply about brilliant techniques or groundbreaking discoveries.

It was about the person lying on the operating table.

Born in Pescara, Italy, in 1933, Rastelli graduated with honors from the University of Parma. In 1961, a NATO scholarship brought him to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where he would eventually become head of Cardiovascular Research.

His scientific achievements were remarkable.

He developed the Rastelli procedure, a groundbreaking surgical technique that transformed the treatment of certain complex congenital heart defects. His work became foundational in pediatric cardiac surgery and earned him major recognition, including gold medals and international honors.

But behind the brilliant surgeon was a deeply Catholic man.

Rastelli believed that the sick possessed a dignity that could never be reduced to a diagnosis or medical chart.

He was known for treating patients as though he were caring for Christ Himself.

And remarkably, he continued his demanding medical work while battling Hodgkin's disease.

He died in Rochester on February 2, 1970, at only 36 years old, leaving behind his wife, Anna, and their young daughter, Antonella, who later became a doctor herself.

Years later, the Catholic Church permitted the opening of his cause for beatification.

His story offers a beautiful reminder to Catholic physicians—and to all of us:

You don't have to choose between excellence and holiness.

You can pursue science with your whole mind while serving God with your whole heart.

For Rastelli, every patient was more than a case.

Every patient was a person made in the image of God.

And perhaps that is the greatest medicine of all:

To see Christ in the person who needs you.

“Vita mutatur, non tollitur.”
“Life is changed, not ended.”

Servant of God Giancarlo Rastelli, pray for us.
