This weekend, Barney Lane walked us through the history and shifting meanings of the word 'woke', moving from its deep roots in Black culture to its modern political connotations.

Reflection Question: How has your understanding of this word changed over time, and how can we look past modern political labels to see the heart of what it means to live out a positive, compassionate worldview every day?
Share your thoughts below.

"On Being Woke" with Barney Lane
The expression "Woke" originally came out of Black culture almost 100 years ago and came to mean more in this century, eventually taking on a negative connotation in current times among conservatives. Barney Lane will share about the history and shifting meanings of "Woke" and his own experience with "Woke" as part of a positive world view in one's daily life.
Barney Lane moved to Colorado in 2024 with his wife Stephanie and joined CUUC the following year. He is retired from careers in broadcasting, real estate, education and selling bicycles. He is an avid road cyclist, creates wood sculptures and writes essays. His children, Jeremy and Rachel, light up his life.

These words carry a profound truth for our spiritual journey. To flourish isn't just about individual success; it is about the health of the entire ecosystem we share. At Columbine, our theme of Flourishing Together calls us to look beyond ourselves, to lean into covenant, and to build bridges of empathy and justice.
When we show up for one another, the "so much" we can accomplish becomes limitless. We're so grateful to be on this journey of growth with you.

Lakewood UMC is excited to present An Evening with Billy Simons Jr.
In this solo acoustic performance, Billy weaves together original songwriting with narratives that explore the landscape of modern life and the persistent spirit of political resistance.

Two ticket options are available:
1) General admission tickets
2) General admission tickets with a discounted copy of Billy's Book "Earth Is Not a Planet", a collection of poems and stories Billy wrote and illustrated. Learn more about that at www.thebillysimonsjr.com

Billy Simons Jr. is a folk Americana artist who writes songs that dig down and punch up. Whether he’s calling out injustice, honoring the quiet resilience of everyday people, or spinning tales of heartbreak and hope, Billy crafts songs that hum with humanity and humor.
His first protest song Jesus Went to Heaven put him on the map with its critique of religious hypocrisy and Christian Nationalism, earning praise for its lyrical bite and stripped-down sincerity. He followed it with They Made a Pig the Pilot, a darkly comic take on corrupt leadership, became an underground favorite for its clever bite and literary allusions. In We Are Great Again, he sings a searing satirical ballad that turns political doublespeak into a folk anthem. And in The Bottom Has a Basement, Billy digs even deeper - chronicling a nation’s seemingly endless race to the bottom. If a Tree Fell is perhaps the darkest bit of wry storytelling he has shared, using a flurry of metaphors to address, well... the Epstein Files.
His music blends raw acoustic grit with sharp storytelling, channeling the spirit of Prine, Croce, Chapin, Dylan and the modern protest folk tradition. His songs don’t ask for permission - but rather they demand attention, empathy, and change. For Billy, the truth still belongs in a song - and the song still belongs to the people.

Columbine UU Church is excited to revive a beloved tradition of marching in the Pride Parade in Denver alongside other area UU churches on the morning of June 28th!

Traditionally, members and friends of Columbine have worn light blue shirts to the parade. Below is the link to order our most recent CUUC Pride T-shirt design, if you would like to order one for your self.

While matching is fun, you don't need to have on of our shirts to march with us; you are welcome to wear whatever you want to the parade!

There are options for unisex adult, children's cotton t-shirts, as well as t-shirts made with a more athletic material available in women's, men's, and children's sizes. There are also crewneck sweatshirts and hoodies available in adult sizes.

Keep an eye out for more details regarding marching together.

Order shirts at link in bio.

Join us for Service this weekend:
Remembering Stonewall ; Who Leads the Charge?
As we begin celebrating Pride month this week, we are invited to take a look back to 1969 when q***r folks finally had enough of being oppressed and bullied by the establishment and pushed back in what became known as the Stonewall Riot. Join Rev. Jenny Amstutz and Director of Music Ministry Matthew Cox as we explore how change happens and why the refusal to accept oppression for ourselves and our neighbors is essential to our work for mutual liberation and justice.

During service, children will be invited to join us for our Faith Exploration program. Our program (K-5th) engages the spirit, mind, and body through games, movement, and hands-on activities. Kids start in the sanctuary with the whole congregation before heading to their classes.
For our youngest friends (under age 5), Nursery care is available for the duration of the service.

This week, we’re exploring how curiosity is a bridge to the world of our future-self. As we do this, we will dive into the idea that what we are curious about as a child almost always shapes who we are as we grow up, and especially what we are passionate about as we get older.
