Devotions from Death Watch

The state of Florida will execute Dusty Spencer on June 25.

As his spiritual advisor, I will be with him at the end. Between now and then, I am walking with him through seventeen devotions…one for each day that remains. I am sharing them so that others might walk alongside us.

This is not a protest. It is not a petition. It is an invitation to the ancient practice of accompanying…of refusing to let someone face what is coming alone.

If you feel called, read each devotion. Pray each prayer. Let Dusty be present to you the way you are present to him. That presence matters. It has always mattered.

The church was born in the shadow of an ex*****on. We know how to do this.

The empire has a whole theology built around this...centuries of it...libraries of it...seminaries full of it...the idea that the hierarchy of provision is the hierarchy of God, that those at the top have what they have because God willed it and marginalized and oppressed peoples are at the bottom because God willed that too.
But Moses is standing at the edge of everything, speaking to a marginalized and oppressed people on the threshold of what was always promised and never given. His final word is not a law. It is not a liturgy. It is not even, strictly speaking, a blessing.
It is a demand to remember.
The desert was not a detour. It was a seminary.
The empire is the enemy.

The desert...the empire...are all indictments of every system that manufactures scarcity to control marginalized and oppressed peoples.

Love so loved the world that love gave love’s only love, so that everyone who believes in love might not perish but might have eternal life. For love did not send love’s love into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through love. Whoever believes in love will not be condemned, but whoever does not believe in love has already been condemned, because one has not believed in the only love that matters.

Explorations in John 3 arguing that love is the epicenter of God, creation and humanity...and defiance of condemnation is Christ's path.

Into this orphan world Jesus speaks: I will not leave you orphans. I will come to you.

Jesus is saying: I am sending you the One who will not let you be silenced. I am sending you the One who will testify on your behalf when every other voice has lined up against you. I am sending you the One whom the world cannot accept because the world has built itself on lies and this Spirit is the Spirit of truth.
