Westover Hills Presbyterian Church

Westover Hills Presbyterian Church Presbyterian Church USA We are a connectional Church, working with other Presbyterians in joint mission ventures locally, nationally, and throughout the world.

Westover Hills is a congregation of the Presbyterian Church (USA), the largest of the Presbyterian denominations in the United States and is a part of the Presbytery of Arkansas. We are also an ecumenical Church, working with other Christians to share the good news of Jesus Christ. All the activities of this congregation are open to people who come in faith regardless of their denominational backg

round. Over time Westover Hills has developed ways of helping to meet the needs of our community and our world through specific outreach programs. Presbyterians trace their history to the 16th century and the Protestant Reformation. Our heritage, and much of what we believe, began with the French lawyer John Calvin (1509-1564), whose writings synthesized much of the Reformed thinking that came before him. Calvin did much of his writing in Geneva, Switzerland. From there, the Reformed movement spread to other parts of Europe and the British Isles. Many of the early Presbyterians in America came from England, Scotland and Ireland. The first American Presbytery was organized at Philadelphia in 1706. The first General Assembly was held in the same city in 1789, and it was convened by the Rev. John Witherspoon, the only minister to sign the Declaration of Independence.

Advent is a season of endings and beginnings. As the calendar year comes to a close, a new church year begins. Christ’s birth ushers us into new ways of living and loving; and yet, the world as we know it spins madly on. And so, we invite you to move through this Advent season as if you are entering a sacred new chapter, holding fast to the reminders that will bolster you for the journey ahead. As you journey through this season, may you find words for belovedness and hope. May you find words for beginning again. For no matter what you are facing, no matter what this new day brings, love is your beginning. | A Sanctified Art LLC

Dear Westover Family,

This Sunday you will notice that some petitions for ballot initiatives will be available for signature at the church. The session voted to allow the collection of signatures without taking a stand on any of the particular issues at hand.

As you will recall, one of our 3-year strategic goals is to elevate our public profile as a church willing to engage difficult and even controversial topics. One of the realities of our contemporary political culture is the (misguided I believe) notion that all issues have two sides; for or against. In truth, the issues that face our community are often far more nuanced. Westover has a history of engaging in conversation on difficult topics rather than trafficking in absolutes.

These ballot initiatives concern big questions of public policy. We no doubt have individuals with opinions coming from varying places on each of them. The action by the session is not an endorsement of a "yes" vote or a "no" vote on any particular issue. It is instead an endorsement that these are matters deserving of in put by the people of Arkansas.

One of the difficulties of being a church that engages the world beyond the walls is maintaining an environment that is inclusive of diverse opinions and perspectives. Westover Hills is fortunate to be a place where political and theological differences are viewed as a strength of our church family rather than an obstacle to our fellowship. I, for one, deeply cherish that part of our value system as a church.

Peace,

Robert
