FIRST Church Downtown Little Rock

FIRST Church Downtown Little Rock A contemporary worshiping community that values discipleship, curiosity, inclusivity, and compassion. We meet weekly on Sundays at 9:30am.

We believe that Christ's commandment to love your neighbor literally means to love every person God has created. We are a new worshiping community meeting in an old space in downtown Little Rock Arkansas. You are invited to come and be a part of this community in downtown Little Rock. We believe that YOU are valuable, YOU are worthy of love, and YOU are already a part of what God is doing in the world.

First Church will be suspending services for a season. We thank all of you who have worshipped with us. Blessings.

Yesterday was Easter and our scripture reading was John 20:1-18. In it was the story of the resurrection of Jesus. We have, almost all of us, heard the story before; we have the privilege of hindsight that the disciples did not. They had been told he would rise again, but their reality was that their teacher was gone; they were in mourning. This grief is why Mary was at the tomb so early in the morning; it is likely she was unable to sleep and sought comfort by the nearness of him. However, when she arrived the massive stone had been rolled away and the tomb was open and empty. Mary was the first to witness the tomb and the resurrected Jesus; she was the first witness to the first Easter. Even in scripture, we do not get to see the resurrection, but we are told of it through Mary's experience. Easter comes in the darkest of times, just before the dawning of a new day.

In yesterday's Palm Sunday scripture reading, Luke 19:28-40, we witnessed the majesty of Jesus. Jesus told two of his disciples to go to the village ahead of him and find a c**t that no one has ever ridden before. They were to untie and bring it to him. And they did. He then rode this donkey c**t. In his sermon, Pastor Stephen pointed out that it is practically impossible to have a smooth ride on an animal that has never been ridden before; yet, Jesus did. That is the majesty, the awe-inspiring peace of Jesus.

In today's scripture reading, John 12:1-8, Mary anointed Jesus's feet with nard and wiped them with her hair. Judas was offended by this, but we are told it was not for the reason he stated. He did not care that this expensive perfume had not been sold to give to the poor; he cared that he could not steal from the profit of such a sale. Judas did not give all of himself to God the way Mary, whose brother Lazarus had just been resurrected, did. She humbled herself and made herself Jesus's servant, the way he would, in a few days, be a servant to his own disciples, by cleaning their feet. We should therefore be like Mary, humble and giving all of ourself to God.
