ARMOR UP!

“Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God." (EPHESIANS 6:14-17, NIV)

We have amor infused with divine power to defend against and defeat the enemy of our souls. It’s like the ultimate OPed weapon just waiting in your inventory, but, unless you activate it or put it on, it’s no help to you. I know a number of families who make “putting on the armor of God” through prayer part of their daily ritual, sometimes as part of their drive to school. I love that!

We put the armor on through prayer, but we also keep it on by being mindful of wha Jesus has given to each of us. Jesus, God’s Word, declared that He was the TRUTH, able to keep us from stumbling on the Devil’s lies. Jesus is also our RIGHTEOUSNESS, not that we have a righteousness of our own that is constantly in jeopardy by my bad choices but consistent because of Jesus’ sacrifice. We have our feet (and our mouths) fitted with READINESS that comes from the good news of PEACE. We don’t offer the lost and the world happiness; we offer them peace, which deeper and better by far. FAITH comes from hearing and hearing from the Word of God, and that FAITH blocks the attacks of the enemy. Finally, we have the SWORD OF THE SPIRIT, the only offensive weapon in our arsenal and it’s not even ours. We learn the Word, study the Word, memorize the Word, and we trust the Holy Spirit to yield it by bringing it to mind, by allowing it to cut through what is us and what is Him.

You, oh parent, have some mighty items at your disposal. Activate them through prayer and use them by remembering all that Jesus has purchased for you. Then, lead your kids to do the same.

BED TIME is quiet time, a moment for you and your child to approach God together. Approach is a matter of focus not distance, because, this week, we celebrate and apply the fact that Holy Spirit is God in us and is available to all who believe.

He is available; we simply must tune our minds to hear His voice. A desire to obey helps that process along. Ask for that together this evening.

AVAILABLE TO ALL?
“If any of you needs wisdom, you should ask God for it. He will give it to you. God gives freely to everyone and doesn’t find fault." (JAMES 1:5, NIrV)

Every parent needs wisdom. Only foolish parents think they have it all figured out. When was the last time, your kid did something that led you to wonder, “What am I gonna do now?” For me, this happens daily to weekly. You may be a better-equipped parent than me, but I suspect we all find ourselves there.

Here’s the good news, the promise that God gives us: Ask for wisdom. He will give it to you. The Holy Spirit is available to all who believe, and one of His greatest gifts is wisdom to all who ask for it. But God doesn’t give begrudgingly; instead, he gives freely without finding fault.

One of the main reasons we don’t ask our friends or family for wisdom? We fear judgment or them thinking less of us. This may be a probable threat with your mother-in-law, but not with God. God gives wisdom freely without finding fault. He is a deep well of knowledge that is accessible and available to all. So today, ask Him for wisdom. Wherever you are confused, ask for answers. Wherever you are unsure, ask for clarity. Ask God for wisdom.

To the unindoctrinated, Kid Life may feel a little... "chaotic", but nothing could be farther from the truth. Even a game filled with 7 different animal noises, brings us to a place of listening for the voice of the Holy Spirit in the middle of the chaos of our day. Even chaos has its place and purpose in Kid Life. See you Sunday!

If you ask it, be ready to answer it. This week, we are teaching your kids that the Holy Spirit helps us be bold, and that is true for you as well. DRIVE TIME is connection time, a chance to relate to your kids as a friend, and friends share back and forth, taking turns to answer. Friends also pray for one another, so, when you both have shared where you need boldness, invite the Holy Spirit into those areas.

BOLD PARENTING

“Fathers, don’t make your children angry. Instead, instruct them and teach them the ways of the Lord as you raise them." (EPHESIANS 6:4, NIrV)

Sometimes as a parent, you have to be bold. You have to have confidence to say things that your kids will not appreciate until they are older and more mature. There are moments when you have to make wise decisions that your kids are unable or unwilling to make that keep them safe and pointed in the right direction. And the Holy Spirit is our helper at that moment, giving us the courage necessary to speak with boldness.

But there are times as a parent when the boldness to say what is for your kids best transforms into a desire to simply “speak your mind” without concern or compassion for your child. The normal and appropriate response to such a tone and motivation is anger. I’m not saying to avoid tension and conflict as a parent, but I am saying that every time your child ends up getting angry that you should evaluate how you said something. Proverb 15:1-2 declares that the wise have a way of speaking that keeps anger away and that makes knowledge appealing to their audience.

So Holy Spirit gives us boldness but also wisdom and compassion as we lead our kids, instructing and teaching them in the ways of the Lord.

Jesus gave us the Holy Spirit, the Helper or parakleet, to come alongside us. MEAL TIME is culture time, discussion time, so let's use it to find out if our kids see Holy Spirit as a friend who can help and guide.

Our God is a chatty God, speaking all the time. Sometimes, we just miss it, so use your story as an example of how Holy Spirit can speak to your kids. Whatever they share, make sure to celebrate any attempt to lean in and listen to Holy Spirit by your kids.

LIVE VERSUS WALK?

“Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit." (GALATIANS 5:25, NIrV)

We live by the Spirit. Whether you are a believer in Jesus or not, you have life because the Holy Spirit gave you life. As a believer in Jesus, you know how life, true life, is in the Spirit as He is alive and active in you now. Now, you have a choice will you determine your steps or will you allow the Holy Spirit to determine your steps?

What determines your path and your plan for the day? Is it your calendar? Your to-do list? I’m a driven, task-centered dude, so this is a challenge for me. I’m writing this email because it is on my to-do list. I do, however, hope that what I write is Spirit-led, written in step with the Spirit. The Holy Spirit wants to be a moment-by-moment, step-by-step help and guide today. He wants to encourage, strengthen, and direct you.

But there is a price: You have to slow down and get quiet. Those are two of the most offensive phrases to me as a 21st century American. Our culture is filled with distraction, driven by hustle, but the Holy Spirit invites us to seek Him for help and guidance. And He will give it, in work, in parenting, in friendships. Let’s keep in step with the Spirit today and invite our kids to follow that example.

The Holy Spirit gives us power, power to tell others about Jesus, power to live with kindness, gentleness, and the other fruit of the Spirit. MORNING TIME is a time to celebrate your kid, to encourage them, to launch them out with the confidence you have that he can live the life God has for him. So let him know how you have seen the power of the Holy Spirit at work in his life.

THE HOLY SPIRIT HAS A PURPOSE!

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you. Then you will tell people about me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria. And you will even tell other people about me from one end of the earth to the other." (ACTS 1:8, NIrV)

“Then you will tell people about me…” When Jesus promised the Holy Spirit to His disciples, he explained what the outflow of that would look like. When the Holy Spirit comes upon us, comes upon our kids, we will tell people about Jesus. Jesus said His followers will make a habit of doing this locally, regionally, and, even, globally.

You get to share in this promise as you tell your kids about Jesus. remember you have the Holy Spirit to help you in that process. It is not something you have to figure out on your own.

Also, your kids get to share in that promise, so let’s pray that they receive all the Spirit has for them as we drive them to school. Let’s encourage them that the Holy Spirit will give them courage and words to tell their classmates about Jesus. And then let’s watch what might happen as the Holy Spirit fulfills His purpose in our lives.

We love watching and encouraging your kids to worship. It is so much fun to see them jumping, spinning, and singing because God is good. See you Sunday!
