What are they crucifying?

Today we walked through the story of the cross through Scripture and the extinguishing of candles.

We remembered not just what happened to Jesus…
but what was rejected:

Obedience. Loyalty. Courage. Truth. Dignity. Love. Hope.

Even now, take a moment. Pause. Reflect.

Don’t rush to Easter.

Stay at the cross.

We are grateful to share that our 145th Anniversary Celebration at Little River First United Methodist Church was recently featured in the Monitor-Journal.

It was a meaningful day of worship, remembrance, and community as we gave thanks for 145 years of God’s faithfulness.

We are thankful to be part of this community and grateful for the opportunity to share our story.

If you missed the article, we invite you to take a moment to read it below.

Still smiling from Sunday…
With grateful hearts, we give thanks to God for a beautiful and Spirit-filled 145th Anniversary Celebration at Little River First United Methodist Church! 🎉⛪

What a joy it was to gather past and present members, friends, and community to celebrate 145 years of God’s faithfulness in this place.

We were blessed by the message shared by our D.S. Rev. Karen Rice Ratzlaff, who reminded us from Hebrews 12 that “we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses.”

Those who came before us who built, served, prayed, and believed are part of our story. And because of them, we are called to keep running this race of faith with perseverance, keeping our eyes on Jesus.

From the meaningful worship, the powerful Word, the music that lifted our spirits, to the fellowship shared around the table every moment was a reminder that God has truly been with Little River First through every generation.

Thank you to everyone who came, who served, who prayed, and who supported this celebration in any way. You made this day unforgettable.

As your pastor, my heart is full. This was not just a celebration of the past, but a calling into the future.

We are still running the race. 🙏

⛪ Countdown to 145 Years – Fun Fact #8

Before having their own building, the Methodist congregation sometimes shared space with others.

In 1882, the Congregational Church allowed Methodists to use their building on alternate Sundays.

Even then, the church was built on community and cooperation.

⛪ Countdown to 145 Years – Fun Fact #7

Here’s a mystery in our church history!

The church began in 1880, but the first anniversary was counted from 1881 when the first pastor arrived.

Because of this, many of our anniversary celebrations have been off by one year!

History has its surprises 😊

⛪ Countdown to 145 Years – Fun Fact #6

Did you know that Little River UMC was officially organized after a revival in October 1880?

Rev. J. W. Crow helped form the church as a Methodist Episcopal class, marking the beginning of our church family.

Revival sparked what we now celebrate 145 years later!

⛪ Countdown to 145 Years – Fun Fact #5

A custom at the time was known as “pounding the preacher” and consisted of members of the congregation surprising the parsonage family with gifts of food – each item was to weigh a
pound. Sometimes part of the pastor’s salary was paid with gifts of wood for the furnace. A wood sawing bee was held at one time to fill the parsonage basement with enough wood to last
all winter.

⛪ Countdown to 145 Years – Fun Fact #4

Conference records show that the first regular minister of this church was the Rev. B. F. Edwards who arrived March 8, 1881. No more Little River newspapers were found until the May 5, 1881 issue of a new paper called The Rural West. So, we can find no news of the arrival of Rev. Edwards. It has always puzzled members as to why the 25th anniversary of the church was celebrated in 1906 instead of 1905, which has made all the celebrations a year off.
