The One Who Came Back | Luke 17:11–19

Ten cried out for mercy.
Ten started walking.
Ten were healed.
But only one came back.

Today we begin our new sermon series, UPSIDE DOWN: Encounters with Jesus That Change Everything.

In Luke 17, Jesus meets ten people desperate for healing. They all receive the gift, but one turns around and returns to the Giver.

Perhaps the question for us today is not simply, “Are we thankful?” but something deeper:

Do we know how to come back?

Something new begins this Sunday at Little River First UMC! ❤️

What happens when Jesus turns the way we see grace, possessions, ourselves, one another and even death upside down?

This Sunday, we begin our new sermon series, UPSIDE DOWN: Encounters with Jesus That Change Everything.

Over the next several weeks, we will journey through encounters with Jesus that challenge our assumptions and invite us to see life through the eyes of God’s Kingdom.

We begin this Sunday with “The One Who Came Back” Luke 17:11–19, as we also celebrate World Communion Sunday and remember that Christ’s table stretches far beyond the walls of our church. 🌎🍞

And there’s something else new! 📖

Beginning this Sunday, we will also be sharing the Sunday sermon here on our page at the same time we gather for worship, so whether you are with us in the sanctuary or joining us online, there will be a place for you to hear the Word and journey with us through this series.

For eight weeks, we have been sitting with Jesus on the mountain, listening to what it means to live the Kingdom way. Tomorrow, we come to the end of the Sermon on the Mount and Jesus leaves us with a question: What will we do with what we have heard?

Two roads. Two foundations. And a call not simply to hear the words of Jesus, but to build our lives upon them.As we prepare for worship tomorrow, consider this:

What am I building my life on and is following Jesus actually changing the way I live?

It’s always easier to see the speck in someone else’s eye than the log in our own. 👀

Tomorrow, as we continue On the Mountain: Living the Kingdom Way, Jesus invites us to look within before we look at others, to ask, seek, and knock when we discover our own need for grace, and then to extend that same grace to others.

Maybe the question for us this weekend is simple:
Am I as generous in giving grace as I am eager to receive it?

What do our treasures, our loyalties, and our worries reveal about our hearts?

In Matthew 6, Jesus gives us three teachings that may seem separate at first:

Treasures. Two Masters. Worry.

But perhaps they are more connected than we realize.

Jesus tells us, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Then He reminds us that we cannot serve two masters. And finally, He speaks directly to the worries we carry about tomorrow.

Because what we treasure can begin to master us.
And what masters us can become the very thing we are afraid to lose.

So Jesus invites us to look deeper.

What has my heart?
What is mastering my life?
What am I afraid to trust God with?

Jesus is not dismissing the very real things we worry about. Instead, He reminds us that our lives are held by a Father who knows what we need and then He gives us another way to live:

“Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness.”

Maybe that is a word you need today. You do not have to have tomorrow figured out in order to trust the God who will meet you there.

What a Friday night in Little River! 🏈🍕🎉

Congratulations to our Little River football team on a 64–6 win! We enjoyed cheering on our students under the Friday night lights, and afterward, we welcomed high school students and their friends to Little River First UMC for our first After-Game Pizza Party of the school year.

Good football, plenty of pizza, lots of conversation, and time spent together what a wonderful way to begin this year’s pizza parties! ❤️

A big thank you to everyone who helped make the evening possible, and to all the students who came over after the game. We loved having you!

What does our faith look like when nobody is watching?

Jesus speaks about giving, praying, and fasting in Matthew 6, but His concern is not simply whether we practice these things. He asks us to look deeper: Who are we doing them for?

It is possible to do the right thing and still be more concerned about being noticed than being formed by God.Jesus invites us into a quieter kind of faith a faith that does not need applause. A prayer whispered when no one else hears. Generosity that does not need recognition. A life with God that is just as real in secret as it is on Sunday morning.

Maybe that's a word some of us need this week:

You don't have to perform for God.
You are already seen.
You are already known.
You are already invited near.

This Sunday, as we continue On the Mountain: Living the Kingdom Way, we will sit with Jesus' words in Matthew 6:1–18 and ask what it means to practice a faith that is genuine from the inside out.

And as we come to the Communion table, we remember that we don't come because we have performed well enough. We come because Christ has invited us.

Love is not always easy.

In fact, some of Jesus' hardest words are found in this week's passage:

"Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you."

It's easy to love those who love us.

It's much harder to extend grace to those who have hurt us.

Yet this is exactly where Jesus invites us to grow.

Radical love does not mean pretending we were never hurt.

It does not mean ignoring injustice or accepting harmful behavior.

It means refusing to let hatred, bitterness, or revenge have the final word.

When we choose forgiveness, mercy, and prayer, we begin to reflect the very heart of God.

This Sunday, we will continue our journey through the Sermon on the Mount as we discover what it means to live with Radical Love.

Whether you have been worshipping with us for years or you are simply looking for hope, there is a place for you.

Sometimes the greatest battles are not the ones everyone can see.We work hard to say the right things, do the right things, and look like everything is okay on the outside.

But Jesus reminds us that God does not just look at our actions He looks at our hearts.

This Sunday, we will continue our journey through the Sermon on the Mount as we explore what Jesus means by "A Deeper Righteousness."

Together we will discover that faith is more than following rules. It is allowing God to transform us from the inside out.

Whether you have been worshipping with us every week, it's been a while since you have been in church, or you will simply pause to read these words today, I pray you will remember this:

God is far more interested in changing your heart than polishing your image.

You are warmly invited to worship with us this Sunday.
