Christopher Columbus was a devout Catholic who viewed his voyages as a religious mission to spread the Catholic faith.
During his lifetime, Columbus practiced his faith publicly and privately:
• Religious Devotion: He was a Third Order Franciscan (lay member) who often wore Franciscan robes and engaged in regular prayer, confession, and communion.
• Missionary Motives: He documented in his logs and letters that a primary goal of his exploration was to convert Indigenous populations to Christianity and help fund a crusade to reclaim Jerusalem.
• Naming Conventions: He frequently named newly discovered lands and his ships (such as the Santa Maria) after religious figures, saints, and holy concepts.
• Recent Origin Theories: While some recent DNA research and historical theories have suggested possible Sephardic Jewish ancestry or heritage from families fleeing persecution in Spain or Italy, historical consensus and his own documented life record record him as a committed Catholic.
