Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls

Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls Living the Gospel courageously ... with energy, spirit, peace We promote right relationships and care for all of creation.

Established in 1891, the Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls are a religious community dedicated to a life of prayer, simple living and service to those in need in the spirit of Saints Francis and Clare of Assisi. As Franciscans, we are committed to nonviolence as we seek to heal and serve the poor and people on the margins. Our ministries have evolved over the years. As pioneers in rural health ca

re and education, we started the first hospital and nursing home in Little Falls, along with a boarding school that served high school girls from 1927-1977. Our ministries and service to people in need spread across the United States and to other countries beginning in 1962 with a mission in Peru. Our outreach in Latin America continues today with ministries in Saltillo and San Rafael, Mexico. Today, we sponsor various ministries to promote Franciscan valuesโ€”responding to the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor. Integral Ecology, Franciscan Spiritual Connections, and the Associate Relationship extend the mission of the Franciscan community out into the world. Franciscan Associates

Twenty-five years later, the memories of September 11 remain with us. While we remember the sorrow and loss of that day, we also remember the extraordinary compassion that brought people together. Strangers helped strangers, communities came together in solidarity, and countless acts of selfless love brought comfort, hope, and healing.

In Laudato Siโ€™, Pope Francisโ€™s โ€œenvironmental encyclical,โ€ we are called not only to recognize the challenges facing our common home, but to respond with compassion, courage, and action. Throughout 2025, the Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls continued to embrace that call through our Laudato Siโ€™ Action Plan, living out an understanding of integral ecology that recognizes the deep connections between care for Earth, care for one another, and care for future generations.

The Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls recently received a certificate from the Laudato Siโ€™ Action Platform, recognizing our accomplishments across all of the platformโ€™s seven areas.

Celebrate, pray, and reflect at this special ecumenical gathering as we express gratitude for the gift of clean water and consider our shared responsibility to care for what St. Francis called โ€œsister water.โ€

Then join us for light refreshments and an opportunity to explore the We Are Water exhibit at Great River Arts. Join us at First Lutheran Church for the gathering, visit the exhibit at Great River Arts, or participate in both events. All are welcome!

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us to plant native plants beneath the panels in our new habitat-friendly solar field!

With the help of approximately 20 dedicated volunteers, we were able to complete the planting and take an important step toward creating a thriving habitat for pollinators and wildlife. Special thanks to Great River Greening, the Board of Water and Soil Resources (BWSR), and Morrison County SWCD for their partnership and support. We are grateful for all who helped make this day a success!

Today weโ€™re delighted to highlight Jane and Chuck Hauer, whose journey with the Franciscan Sisters began when they first attended Mass and felt a strong sense of welcome and belonging. That experience led them to begin the discernment process to become Associates. Jane also enjoys taking ukulele lessons, adding another joyful dimension to her life and community involvement.

Together, Jane and Chuck generously share their time helping with the Green Fair, brunches, and wherever else they are needed. They are always ready to step in and support the community in meaningful ways.

They share how much they appreciate the positive environment and the joy they find in serving together. They also extend heartfelt thanks for the opportunity to be part of the many ways they can support the Sisters.

A special thank you as well to Karen, our volunteer coordinator, who they describe as excellent to work with and someone who makes everything fun.

Thank you, Jane and Chuck, for your spirit, generosity, and joyful service. We are so grateful for you!

This September, we are focusing on Peace. We asked Sister Pat Forester, "What does being a peacemaker mean to you?" She shared:

"As Franciscans, we are called to build peace in our personal lives and throughout society. Living a peaceful life involves practicing active nonviolence, embracing simplicity, standing in solidarity with those who are poor, and caring for our common home, the Earth.

I have spent my life serving those who are poor. My family taught me the importance of caring for the Earth, but today the need is more urgent than ever. It calls us to reach beyond ourselves through prayer, reflection, and action in response to the needs of our global community."
