Many countries have beloved celebrations that began in the “old country” and are now celebrated around the world. Ireland has Lá Fhéile Pádraig, better known as St. Patrick’s Day. Bavaria has d’Wiesn, or Oktoberfest. Mexico has Cinco de Mayo. And Norway has Grunnlovsdagen, (Constitution Day).
Celebrated each year on May 17, Grunnlovsdagen — also known as Syttende Mai — commemorates the signing of Norway’s constitution at Eidsvoll on May 17, 1814. The constitution declared Norway an independent kingdom during the turbulent years following the Napoleonic Wars and was an important step in Norway’s path toward independence.

Today, Syttende Mai is one of Norway’s most joyful national celebrations. Unlike many national holidays, it is not centered on military parades, but on children, community, heritage, and celebration. Across Norway, people take part in children’s parades, known as barnetog, wave Norwegian flags, wear traditional bunad clothing, and enjoy favorite treats like pølse wrapped in lompe, lefse, ice cream, and heart-shaped waffles.

The celebration has also traveled far beyond Norway. Norwegian communities around the world honor the day.

A common greeting heard on May 17 is “Gratulerer med dagen!” — meaning “Congratulations on the day!
