Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:4-7
Three powerful antidotes to worry and anxiety: prayer, supplication, and thanksgiving. At first thought this may seem an over simplification. But I have noticed in my own life how gratitude is a mutually exclusive emotion to guilt or anger or fear. I cannot feel anger or fear when I am also feeling grateful. When I pause to count my blessings I discover they far outnumber my worries.
Anxiety is bolstered by a sense of loneliness and powerlessness. Prayer and supplication acknowledge two vital realities: God is near you; and God is powerful. A daily practice of prayer and supplication has a way of growing faith and trust, a powerful antidote to anxiety. Gratitude and giving thanks, shifts the focus from what you do not have to what you do have, a possession that is secure.
Take this powerful message from a man who writes from behind prison bars, who is fairly certain that his life will be short lived. But this man, through many trials has learned the secret of living faithfully through severe testing. Paul can rejoice. His spirit is not held captive to circumstance. Indeed, Paul confesses from behind bars, facing death, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
