Diocesan Staff Announcement

We are delighted to announce that the Rev. John Deason will join our diocesan staff as Associate for Congregational Vitality. In this part-time position, John will work closely with the Rev. Dr. Kristofer Lindh-Payne, our canon to the ordinary for leadership, in the areas of church revitalization, congregational growth, strategic partnerships and collaboration with Lutheran congregations. His role will include consulting, coaching, and supporting initiatives on church planting, property use and leadership development.

John has served since 2020 as pastor of the Church of the Holy Apostles and St. Stephen, Arbutus, a “Lutherpalian” congregation formed in partnership with the Delaware-Maryland Synod of the ELCA, and he will continue to serve that community part time. He previously served on our diocesan staff as development director and with Church on the Square, Baltimore prior to his call to ordination.

We look forward to working with John as we revitalize and strengthen our church communities and live into our vision of a community of love. Please join us in welcoming him to our diocesan staff.

First day of Spring
03/21/2025

First day of Spring

On this spring equinox in the Northern Hemisphere, I am thinking about seeds; I am thinking about the darkness in which green and light and spring have their start; I am thinking about what it means to begin, and to begin again. Here is a blessing about that for you, for this day and every day. And for friends in the Southern Hemisphere, blessings of the autumnal equinox to you!

BLESSING THE SEED

I should tell you
at the outset:
this blessing will require you
to do some work.

First you must simply
let this blessing fall
from your hand,
as if it were a small thing
you could easily let slip
through your fingers,
as if it were not
most precious to you,
as if your life did not
depend on it.

Next you must trust
that this blessing knows
where it is going,
that it understands
the ways of the dark,
that it is wise
to seasons
and to times.

Then—
and I know this blessing
has already asked much
of you—
it is to be hoped that
you will rest
and learn
that something is at work
when all seems still,
seems dormant,
seems dead.

I promise you
this blessing has not
abandoned you.
I promise you
this blessing
is on its way back
to you.
I promise you—
when you are least
expecting it,
when you have given up
your last hope—
this blessing will rise
green
and whole
and new.

A poem for the first week in Lent by Dylan Thomas:

This Bread I Break

This bread I break was once the oat,
This wine upon a foreign tree
Plunged in its fruit;
Man in the day or wind at night
Laid the crops low, broke the grape’s joy.

Once in this wine the summer blood
Knocked in the flesh that decked the vine,
Once in this bread
The oat was merry in the wind;
Man broke the sun, pulled the wind down.

This flesh you break, this blood you let
Make desolation in the vein,
Were oat and grape
Born of the sensual root and sap;
My wine you drink, my bread you snap
