As for me, I have set my King
on Zion, my holy hill.
I will tell of the decree:
The Lᴏʀᴅ said to me, “You are my Son; today I have begotten you.”
Praise the Lᴏʀᴅ, all nations!
Extol him, all peoples!
For great is his steadfast love toward us,
and the faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. Praise the Lᴏʀᴅ!

Today, we remember and thank God for His holy servant Johann Gerhard (1582-1637 AD). Gerhard served as a teacher, serving as superintendent over Heldburg and as professor at the University of Jena. A master theologian, he is known for his Sacred Meditations, devotions written for the Church, and for his Loci Communes Theologici. Over the course of twenty-two volumes, he traced Christian teachings from their roots in Scripture and how they were understood, or misunderstood, by theologians throughout history. For this work, Gerhard is placed with Luther and Chemnitz as the great theologians of the Church.

Almighty God, heavenly Father, through the ministry and teaching of Johann Gerhard You have blessed Your Church and built up Your people in the holy faith. Continue to provide Your Church teachers who will proclaim Your truth with zeal and with great kindness and love; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Thus says the Lᴏʀᴅ:
“Keep justice, and do righteousness,
for soon my salvation will come,
and my deliverance be revealed...

“And the foreigners who join themselves to the Lᴏʀᴅ,
to minister to him, to love the name of the Lᴏʀᴅ,
and to be his servants,
everyone who keeps the Sabbath and does not profane it,
and holds fast my covenant—
these I will bring to my holy mountain,
and make them joyful in my house of prayer;
their burnt offerings and their sacrifices
will be accepted on my altar;
for my house shall be called a house of prayer
for all peoples.”
The Lord Gᴏᴅ,
who gathers the outcasts of Israel, declares,
“I will gather yet others to him
besides those already gathered.”

May God be gracious to us and bless us
and make his face to shine upon us,
that your way may be known on earth,
your saving power among all nations.
Let the peoples praise you, O God;
let all the peoples praise you!
Let the nations be glad and sing for joy,
for you judge the peoples with equity
and guide the nations upon earth.
Let the peoples praise you, O God;
let all the peoples praise you!
The earth has yielded its increase;
God, our God, shall bless us.
God shall bless us;
let all the ends of the earth fear him!

Rev. Dr. James Bushur teaching Kansas and Oklahoma district pastors on the Church Fathers at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Wichita. Dr. Bushur emphasized the early church's preparation for martyrdom, teaching from the Didache, Ignatius's epistles, and the Martyrdom of Polycarp.

"There are two ways, one of life and one of death, and there is a great difference between the two ways. Therefore the way of life is this: first, to love the God who made you; second, your neighbor as yourself; and whatever you would wish not to happen to you, then you do not do this to others."

- The Didache

I love you,
O Lᴏʀᴅ, my strength.
The Lᴏʀᴅ is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
I call upon the Lᴏʀᴅ, who is worthy to be praised,
and I am saved from my enemies.
The cords of death encompassed me;
the torrents of destruction assailed me;
the cords of Sheol entangled me;
the snares of death confronted me.
In my distress I called upon the Lᴏʀᴅ;
to my God I cried for help.
From his temple he heard my voice,
and my cry to him reached his ears.
Then the earth reeled and rocked;
the foundations also of the mountains trembled
and quaked, because he was angry.
Smoke went up from his nostrils,
and devouring fire from his mouth;
glowing coals flamed forth from him.
He bowed the heavens and came down;
thick darkness was under his feet.
He rode on a cherub and flew;
he came swiftly on the wings of the wind.
He made darkness his covering, his canopy around him,
thick clouds dark with water.
Out of the brightness before him
hailstones and coals of fire broke through his clouds.
The Lᴏʀᴅ also thundered in the heavens,
and the Most High uttered his voice,
hailstones and coals of fire.
And he sent out his arrows and scattered them;
he flashed forth lightnings and routed them.
Then the channels of the sea were seen,
and the foundations of the world were laid bare
at your rebuke, O Lᴏʀᴅ,
at the blast of the breath of your nostrils.
He sent from on high, he took me;
he drew me out of many waters.
