Thank you to the Smoky Valley Community Foundation for their support of our food ministry at Messiah Church! We received two grants ($2500 in total) to fund our weekend food bag program and to help cover the cost of adult meals at the Summer Food Program! No one should go hungry. It was a great Pentecost Sunday at Messiah! We sang, we rang, and we considered the Holy Spirit that is at work now among us. The empire remains, but so does the Holy Spirit.

The Spirit does not need to wait until we are healed, until the world is healed, to do its work in and through us. Sometimes, it's in the destruction and devastation that the Holy Spirit works best. Sometimes, things need to burn down, so that new growth can rise up. So let us remain here in the city, in the Empire, in the midst of the flames and work for justice and peace, the things that matter the most to us.

May the fire of the Holy Spirit strengthen and sustain us, and may we be joyful anyway.

"Here is the Good News, People of God: The wind of the Holy Spirit joined them in their sorrow, in their fear, in their confusion. The fire of the Holy Spirit lit a flame in them to work for justice and peace, to stand strong in their faith in the face of empire. The voice of the Holy Spirit gave understanding to people from different lands to join together in God's work in the world.

And the Holy Spirit is doing that now among us. The empire remains, but so does the Holy Spirit.

Kate Bowler reminds us that "Joy does not need to wait until you are healed." Today, on this Pentecost Sunday, I might replace the word "joy" with the Spirit. The Spirit does not need to wait until you are healed, until the world is healed, to do its work in and through us. Sometimes, it's in the destruction and devastation that the Holy Spirit works best. Sometimes, things need to burn down, so that new growth can rise up. So let us remain here in the city, in the Empire, in the midst of the flames and work for justice and peace, the things that matter the most to us. May the fire of the Holy Spirit strengthen and sustain us, and may we be joyful anyway."
