Sardis Presbyterian Church of Linden

Sardis Presbyterian Church of Linden We are a body of believers who love Jesus and are learning to spread His message and share His love in our community and the world.

We take our faith very seriously, but not ourselves! In January, 2013, we called Sally Henry to be our new pastor. We called her because she knows how to be real with people - in her life and in her sermons. She has a strength in reaching out in the community in love and service, and she's teaching us how to do it as well. We're currently a bunch of retired or almost-retired folks, and we'd love t

o encourage families to join us so we can love on your kids, be parenting and marriage mentors, and simply share our lives with you. Please, come worship with us some Sunday morning at 11am! We'd love to have you join us!

Today was the third Sunday after Pentecost. Pastor Fischer’s sermon message focused on Love In Action. A summary is below.

During the Youth Message he asked our youth to each share thoughts on what they had enjoyed and what they learned as they had attended the Westminster Presbyterian Church Youth Conference held in Fayetteville last week. (See related Facebook post from earlier this week.)

Scripture readings today included Exodus 19:2-8; Psalm 100; Romans 5:1-8; Matthew 9:35-10:1.

The next session meeting will be on June 17, 2026 at 6 PM in the fellowship hall. Sardis will hold a special independence Day luncheon celebration on Sunday, July 5 following the service.

Facebook Summary: Mission: Love in Action

When Jesus looked upon the crowds, He did not simply see people—He saw their struggles, their fears, their burdens, and their spiritual need. Matthew tells us that He was “moved with compassion” because they were “harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.” That compassion led Him to action. He taught, healed, served, and ultimately gave His life on the cross so that we might be reconciled to God.

The message of this passage is clear: Christ's mission is fueled by compassion, and He calls His followers to share in that mission. Jesus reminds us that “the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.” There are still countless people searching for hope, purpose, forgiveness, and peace. The need for the Gospel remains as great today as it was in the first century.

Before sending His disciples into the harvest field, Jesus instructed them to pray. Prayer reminds us that this is God's mission, not ours. It teaches us dependence upon His power and helps us see others through His eyes. When we begin with prayer, we discover that God is already at work preparing hearts and opening doors for ministry.

The good news is that God does not call only the exceptionally gifted. He uses ordinary people transformed by His grace. The disciples were fishermen, tax collectors, and imperfect individuals, yet God used them to change the world. In the same way, every believer is called to participate in God's mission. We are not saved simply for our own benefit; we are called to represent Christ to the world around us.

As followers of Jesus, we are called to put our faith into action. We proclaim the Gospel with our words and demonstrate God's love through our actions. When we feed the hungry, encourage the discouraged, visit the lonely, forgive others, and share the hope of Christ, we become living examples of God's love. Truth proclaimed and love demonstrated work together to point people to Jesus.

Psalm 100 reminds us to “Serve the Lord with gladness.” Mission is not merely a duty; it is a privilege. We have the joy of sharing the hope we have found in Christ and participating in God's work of redemption in the world. Every act of kindness, every prayer, every word of encouragement, and every faithful witness can become part of God's harvest.

This week, consider where God may be calling you to show Christ's compassion. Who needs encouragement? Who needs a helping hand? Who needs to hear about the love and grace of Jesus Christ? May we answer Christ's call and live as faithful disciples, carrying His love into the world through both our words and our actions.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the love and compassion You have shown us through Jesus Christ. Help us to see others through Your eyes and respond with hearts full of grace and mercy. Give us courage to share the Gospel, wisdom to serve others faithfully, and strength to follow wherever You lead. May our words reflect Your truth, our actions reveal Your love, and our lives point others to Jesus. Use us as laborers in Your harvest field for Your glory and the growth of Your Kingdom. In Christ's name we pray. Amen.

The youth of Sardis had the opportunity to attend the Westminster Presbyterian Church Youth Conference in Fayetteville this week. Guest minister, Rev. Alex Fischer, son of our own Pastor Don Fischer, provided inspirational and encouraging messages each evening that resonated well with our youth who face challenges and benefit from encouragement in today's world. After energizing opening worship and a delicious meal the youth broke off into groups where they attended awesome small group sessions. These sessions included developing relationships with peers, making sour dough bread and learning about God's love and mercy through analogies with various breads including unleavened, manna, sour dough, naan, tortillas, and sweet rolls. In yoga they learned of God's desire for us to relax and take care of our bodies through stress relief like simple yoga moves and time to feel God's presence within us. Drama gave an opportunity for youth to work together to develop a super hero skit that focused on helping people and rebounding from adversity. Crafts allowed youth to paint peaceful nature scenes reflecting the beauty of God's creation. Outdoor activities helped groups learn to work together to achieve a goal and trust each other to navigate an obstacle course while blindfolded. Axe throwing developed individual skill and confidence.
THANK YOU WESTMINSTER CHURCH FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO ATTEND THIS AMAZING YOUTH
CONFERENCE. THANK YOU PASTOR DON FOR ARRANGING FOR OUR ATTENDANCE.

The Linden Christian Men’s Fellowship guest speaker this evening was Clint Nordan. He along with his sister, Melody Edwards had recently visited the Ark Encounter as well as the Creation Museum in Kentucky.

His presentation revealed the history of the Genesis Flood as told by Scripture and science. The Ark is a life-size museum. Noah was chosen by God because he was a righteous man. He, his wife and three sons and their wives were the only survivors of the flood.

Clint gave an in-depth description of the Ark as Noah’s family and all the animals survived on the boat for 370 days.

They also visited the Creation Museum where history comes to life with exhibits packed with biblical truth and scientific evidence.

A delicious meal was enjoyed by all in attendance. Melody and Clint awarded puzzles, posters, and books to the attendees.

The LCMF meeting is Tuesday evening at 7 pm. The topic is “The Ark Encounter “. All are invited. Please bring a side dish.

The Card Class-“Life’s a Beach” is Saturday at 10 am.

Mission and Outreach Committee will meet on Monday, June 17 at 4 pm.

Our guest minister today was Shelley Sanders. She is a recent graduate of Campbell Divinity School.

Constance Ramey led our service. The scripture lesson was taken from Mark 2:1-12. The title of the sermon was, “Faith For Others”.

Rev. Sanders reminded us that faith is a decision we must make when we trust in God. Faith is an action word and involves believing, receiving, speaking God’s word and doing. It has to be demonstrated in our actions.

Capernaum was the town where Jesus was preaching and crowds had gathered at a house to hear the word. He was teaching and preaching with authority, healing the sick, and casting out demons. The people were very excited to hear Him and a very large crowd had gathered. Because the crowd was so big there was no room to get inside.

Friends of a paralytic man wanted Jesus to heal him. Because there was no way to get inside they carried their friend onto the roof, dug through the thatch and lowered him inside on his mat. Jesus, seeing the deep faith of the men carrying their friend, tells the paralyzed man, “ Son your sins are forgiven.”

How do we show our faith? Do we tell others about Jesus? Do we pray, make phone calls, visit, prepare a meal, give to others and help to bear their burdens? It is impossible to please God without faith. Share faith!

Sermon Summary:
ASSURANCE OF AUTHORITY
Matthew 28:16-20
As Matthew's Gospel concludes, the risen Christ gathers His disciples and makes a powerful declaration:
"All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me."
The Great Commission begins with the authority of Jesus. Throughout His earthly ministry, Christ demonstrated His authority over Scripture, nature, sickness, demons, and even death itself. His resurrection from the grave confirmed that He truly is Lord of all creation.
Because Jesus possesses all authority, He commands His followers to "go and make disciples." This mission includes sharing the Gospel, baptizing believers, and teaching others to obey Christ's commands. The Church is called not only to proclaim the truth of Christ but also to live it out through faithful discipleship.
The good news is that we do not undertake this mission alone. Jesus concludes with a promise that continues to encourage believers today:
"And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age."
Through the presence of the Holy Spirit, Christ empowers His people to serve, witness, and make disciples. The success of the mission does not depend on our strength, abilities, or resources, but upon the authority and presence of the risen Lord.
May we live each day under Christ's authority, faithfully sharing His love and grace with our community and the world.

Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your Son, Jesus Christ, who reigns with all authority in heaven and on earth. Strengthen us through Your Holy Spirit to faithfully carry out the mission You have given Your Church. Help us to live as disciples who reflect Your love, truth, and grace in our daily lives. Give us courage to share the Good News with others, trusting that Christ is always with us. In His holy name we pray. Amen.

Sermon Summary:
THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Acts 2:1-21

Pentecost reminds us that the Church was never meant to live by human strength alone. The Holy Spirit came upon the disciples not only to comfort them, but to transform and empower them to become bold witnesses for Jesus Christ.

The same Spirit who moved over creation, empowered the prophets, and descended upon Jesus now dwells within every believer. Through the Holy Spirit, hearts are convicted, lives are transformed, and the Church is strengthened to carry the Gospel to the world.

The Spirit unites believers from every background into one body in Christ and equips each person with gifts to serve God’s kingdom. Pentecost is ultimately about the presence of God working through ordinary people for extraordinary purposes.

May we open our hearts to the leading of the Holy Spirit and allow God to use us to share the love of Christ with the world around us.

“‘Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord of hosts.” — Zechariah 4:6

Closing Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Fill our hearts with faith, courage, and love. Help us to trust in Your power instead of our own strength, and use us to share the hope of Jesus Christ with others. Unite Your Church and guide us daily by Your Spirit. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
