Day 15: “Formed for God’s Family”
“Point to Ponder: I was formed for God’s Family.”
“His unchanging plan has always been to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ.” Ephesians 1:5A
Baptism is still a very debated conversation within the religious communities. Many churches believe many different things. What is the requirement? Do you have to be baptized in order to go to heaven?
There really isn’t anyway to go about this chapter except to talk about that very thing. Baptism. What is it? And is it necessary?
First, I would like to make a distinction. There are two different types of baptism that the Bible talks about.
Water baptism which is supposed to be an outward expression of an internal change. A symbolic gesture of repentance. We learned about water baptism through the ministry of John the Baptist:
Matthew 3:11-12
“I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”
And Spiritual baptism which is what truly seals you as a Child of God and allows for the Holy Spirit to indwell you.
Romans 8:1-11
“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.”
The Bible talks a lot about how people will do the things that they believe will put them in good standing with God but that there was never truly an internal change.
Matthew 7:21-23
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’”
For this reason, at times, the religious symbolic gesture of water baptism makes people believe that they are truly saved. When in reality, the only one that can baptize you is Jesus himself. This goes against what many churches teach. Some churches will work to scare people into getting baptized. Some churches will condemn others for not getting baptized. Some churches will brag about how many people they are baptizing. Be aware dear friends. The Bible warns about these very things.
1 Timothy 4
Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared, who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer. If you put these things before the brothers, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have followed. Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance. For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe. Command and teach these things. Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching. Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophecy when the council of elders laid their hands on you. Practice these things, immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress. Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.
True baptism is only found when you believe that Jesus is Lord.
Romans 10:9-13
“because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
But we are HUMAN and we need more proof!
The thief on the cross is everyone’s go-to.
Luke 23:39-43
“One of the criminals who were hanged railed at him, saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us!” But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
But the thief on the cross is not the only exception to the religious rule of water baptism. In fact, Jesus performed many miracles and signs throughout his life and ministry that allowed people to truly believe in him and be baptized in the spirit. References to this can be found all throughout the 4 gospels in the bible.
Something that stands out to me, however, is the variations in the way he healed the blind.
In Matthew 9, Jesus first asked two men if they believed that he could heal them. When they said yes, he touched their eyes. Then they could see.
In Mark 8, Jesus spit on the man’s eyes then put his hands on the man twice before the man could see clearly.
In John 9, Jesus spit in the dirt to make mud and then had the man go wash in a pool. Then he could see.
Why the variation? If every time he spit in the dirt and made mud, how many people would try to do it themselves?
Also, if water baptism was a requirement to get to heaven, then Jesus would have spent most of his life baptizing people in water. But he didn’t. Does that mean that Jesus didn’t cause a single person to be saved? Or does it mean that there is no one size fits all for people to believe that he is Lord? There was not one method he focused on because he didn’t want us to believe that it is something that WE can do on our own. We need him. We have to believe in Jesus to be truly baptized.
Make no mistake dear friends. I do believe that water baptism is an outward expression of an internal change. And as referenced previously, in 1 Timothy 4:4-5 “For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer.” I believe the Bible clearly shows that when you do something to glorify God, giving him praise and thanksgiving that he will be well pleased.
What is your stance on baptism?
“Question to Consider: How can I start treating other believers like members of my own family?
