Conscience and commitment

BREAKING: Nine local clergy and faith leaders were arrested Tuesday during a “pray-in” outside U.S. Sen. Susan Collins’ Portland office, as demonstrations against federal immigration enforcement and a Homeland Security funding bill intensified in Maine. The arrests followed hours of prayer, singing, scripture readings, and chants by more than 30 people from multiple faith traditions, urging Collins to reject the bill and calling for ICE to end its operations in the state. Organizers said the action was rooted in faith, conscience, and concern for immigrant neighbors they believe are being unfairly targeted.

Police made the arrests without incident after demonstrators refused repeated requests to leave the premises. The protest reflects growing religious and community opposition as immigration enforcement remains a flashpoint nationwide.
