150th Anniversary 1863 – 2013
Asbury United Methodist Church, 3097 Asbury Church Road, Lincolnton will be celebrating its 150th year on Sunday, August 25 with a special homecoming worship
service at 10:30 a.m. Sally Langford, assistant to the Bishop, will be the guest speaker. The service will be followed by a covered dish lunch in the fellowship hall and afternoon singing on the grounds by Dixie Moon, a bluegrass group. In 1789 Daniel Asbury, a circuit-riding preacher, planted the seed for the church which today bears his name. The first congregation was organized in 1816 and met in homes. After the Civil War, Asbury Methodist Church was named and organized in 1863 during a home meeting. The congregation continued to meet in homes for fifteen years. The first church, a one-room frame building, was built in 1878 and was a church and school for seventeen years and helped train neighborhood families spiritually and intellectually. In 1895 a second church, a one-room brick building was built. Four classrooms were added in 1935. The present church was constructed in 1952 by contractors Joe M. Shuford and Sons. The Rev. Oliver preached the first sermon on March 8, 1953. In 1967 a ten-classroom educational building was completed, and a new entrance tower and steeple were constructed. The people of Asbury have always had the tradition of helping their neighbors and have donated food and clothing to needy families, built handicap ramps, volunteered at a local Christian thrift store, supported missionaries and mission trips. The community is invited to participate in annual events which include the Easter Egg Hunt, Vacation Bible School, Chicken Pie Day, Fall Festival, Breakfast with Santa, and seasonal music programs. The church has a Preschool for two through four year old children, Mother’s Morning Out, and Summer Day Camp for first through fifth grade children and Boy Scout Troop 82 and Cub Scout Pack 82. Members go out into the community and have helped build a Habitat house, and continue to work in the soup kitchen, pack food boxes for Christian Ministry, send backpacks of food to school children, help at the homeless shelter, send donations to Henderson Settlement in Frakes, Kentucky and collect shoeboxes for Samaritan’s Purse. The children and youth also participate in these and other special mission projects and mission trips. The church’s vision statement is: Asbury Church is growing a Christian community where all people can be shaped into disciples of Jesus who live to serve God in the world. The church’s motto is: Shaped to Serve. The minister is Pastor Anita Sain. In addition to our current traditional worship service, a modern worship service will begin October 27, 2013 at 9:30 a.m. For more information please contact the church at 704-735-6448.
