Stopping the Spread of Sin

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.” - John 15: 1-4 ESV

I first noticed a few of my tomato leaves in my garden were turning yellow, then slowly more and more of them began to turn shades of yellow and eventually brown. 

Research revealed that this was due to blight, which, if left untreated, can spread and ruin all of the leaves, prevent photosynthesis and eventually damage the tomatoes and ultimately kill the plant. I was able to prune out the infected leaves and use organic methods to help keep the blight from taking over, however, now that the fungus is present, it requires frequent attention to ensure that the plant remains healthy. 

Part of why I enjoy gardening so much is because I’m regularly reminded of Jesus’ teachings while I’m working the soil, since many of his sermons had agrarian themes. 

In John 15, Jesus says that every branch that doesn’t bear fruit will be cut off. In Matthew 7, he even says that every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. My tomatoes demonstrated just how quickly a little disease can take root, choke out all that is good and overtake an entire plant. In what ways does a little bit of sin (jealousy, pride, gossip, hatred, fear, etc.) take over our lives? If it begins to settle in and become a habit, we must be more proactive in rooting out. The best way to do this is by staying attached to the True Vine to ensure we produce good fruit.

Anchored in Christ: Navigating Life’s Storms

“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.” - Hebrews 6:19b

In a world that often equates strength with emotional numbness, we face a profound truth: You can be hurt without becoming bitter. You can be disappointed without losing hope. You can feel afraid without allowing fear to dictate your choices. You can grieve deeply without believing God has abandoned you.

Over the past four years, I’ve journeyed through pain, uncertainty, and loss. The world may encourage us to “harden our hearts,” yet faith doesn’t promise an absence of feeling; it assures us that our feelings don’t have the final word over our lives.

Vulnerability is often perceived as weakness, but Jesus understands this struggle intimately. In John 11:35, we see His humanity in the simple verse: “Jesus wept.” He felt deeply, yet His heart remained aligned with the Father’s purposes. 

Through difficult seasons, I’ve discovered that the goal isn’t to feel nothing, but to know where to turn amid life’s chaos. When heartbreak comes, I cry out to Him, seeking refuge in His promises and strength in His presence.

Hebrews 6:19 states, “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.” It’s this hope that allows us to embrace our feelings—hurt, disappointment, fear, and grief—without drifting away from our anchor.

When disappointment strikes, I cling to God’s promises, remembering my hope is rooted in His faithfulness. In moments of fear, I choose to trust God, despite my anxieties. When grief settles in, I lean into the truth that God is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18). He walks with us through our valleys and never abandons us.

In the end, our ability to feel deeply is a strength when anchored in Christ. He sees our pain, understands our hearts, and holds us close, even in darkness. Let’s embrace our emotions and, amid everything, remember where to turn. Through Him, we find that hurt does not lead to bitterness, disappointment does not extinguish hope, and fear does not define our paths. Heaven on Earth

I was talking with a friend recently about how many people who have struggled with addiction eventually find God. As I thought about why that might be, something occurred to me: maybe, in some sense, what many addicts are searching for is heaven on earth. Whether it’s food, alcohol, s*x, drugs, success, or whatever else we turn to, so many of the things we become addicted to begin with a desire for something good. We want joy. Peace. Comfort. Rest. Pleasure. Connection. We want relief from the ache of life. The desire itself may not be wrong—but somewhere along the way, it becomes distorted. We begin looking to created things to give us what they were never capable of giving.
Then another thought struck me: Jesus wants heaven on earth too.
When Jesus taught His disciples to pray, He said, “Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” In a sense, Jesus taught us to pray for heaven to invade earth—for the goodness, peace, wholeness, and rule of God to become a reality here. Maybe where we get turned around is that we try to bring heaven to earth on our own terms. We reach for good earthly things and ask them to give us what ultimately only God can give: lasting joy, peace, comfort, rest, belonging, and life. But those things can’t bear that weight. The pleasure fades. The comfort wears off. The high comes down. And eventually, we find ourselves reaching for more, trying to recover something that not only leaves us unsatisfied but may actually be destroying us.
Jesus offers another way. He tells us, “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” That gives me hope—for addicts, certainly, but really for all of us.Because maybe underneath so much of our restless searching is a longing for something real. We want the world to be whole. We want the ache to stop. We want joy that lasts, peace that holds, and rest that is truly restful. We’re searching for a taste of heaven.
So, Lord, when I encounter people searching in all the wrong places, help me not to condemn their hunger. Help me to recognize it for what it is: a longing for something only You can truly provide. And then help me point them to You.
