The Improbable Grace of God

“Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.’” -Luke 18:27
I have a tendency to think about things in probabilities. Right now there are official percentages for the probability of rain ten days from now, who will win the super bowl in February or even the probability of an earthquake! Why are we so obsessed with probabilities? I think it’s because we like to get a return on our investments. Whether it’s our time, our money, what we choose to wear or worry about, we want to mentally justify the investments and decisions we make.
I was reminded this week that God doesn’t work in probabilities. As I was thinking about some friends who don’t know the Lord and praying to one day see them put their faith in Christ, I thought to myself, “What reason do they have to change the course of their life and follow Jesus? They’re some of the least likely people to become Christians”. But then I remembered the story of Saul, a Jewish leader who was the most zealous opponent of Christianity who spent all of his time and resources to persecute and kill Christians. As many of you know, Jesus met Saul on the road to Damascus and not only saved him, but transformed his life and led him to become one of the most influential apostles to ever live.
Brothers and sisters don’t give up praying for your unbelieving friends and family. There are no traits that disqualify someone from grace. God’s sovereign grace can step in at any point in a person’s life and draw them to Himself! It’s not our job to estimate the probabilities of where grace should succeed. We serve a sovereign God who knows all things and there will never be a day where he is uncertain of the ones he has called to salvation.
