Tonight I was sitting on the front porch waiting for trick or treaters knowing we probably wouldn’t have many, but I wanted to be there in case some showed up. You see, most kids in our neighborhood go to more affluent areas to get better candy. Shoutout the “Full Bars” episode of Bob’s Burgers. Haha. I get it.
After a little while, a group of kids came walking up the block, but one of them was crying and seemed scared. I asked if everything was alright and was told “Yes, she’s just afraid because we are lost and don’t know how to get home.” I texted my mom, the neighborhood Grandma, and after getting everyone some candy we talked more about their situation. They didn’t know their address or phone number of a parent, BUT they knew they lived near a park with flowers and fish. Sunken Gardens! We had a lead. Haha. They said if we could help get them there, they would be able to direct us to their home.
Now, I should mention somewhere in the conversation I had noticed some accents and asked if they were from Lincoln or somewhere else and they told us they were from Afghanistan. I asked if they knew of Juniper Refuge and their eyes lit up. One said, “Yes! My sponsor is Chris.” I laughed and said I don’t know Chris, but we are friends with Juniper Refuge and that put some trust in place, which was awesome. JR works with refugees, many living near us and does some awesome work and are quality people.
Long story a little longer, we were able to get the kids to their home safely! I also want to say how cool it is to be a part of many different folks and organizations working to help our neighbors downtown and make sure they are loved and safe. Tonight’s story also goes to show that when we make time and are available to our neighbors, we can make a difference. Something as simple as being present and on your porch can have a direct impact on those around you…so let’s keep getting out there and loving our neighbors!
